Oiled chips are happy chips

After a year of use on my TR Kings, I noticed they were becoming magnets for gunk. I would clean them and within a few hours of shuffling, they would be just as dirty as when I started. When I first recieved my set I oiled the whole lot of them and had no gunk problems for several months despite the chips being used weekly and shuffled daily. I decided to conduct an experiment to determine if oiling your chips helps reduce gunk buildup.

The chips: TR King Oasis Club hotstamps (colours: orange and yellow)

First step:
I cleaned all of the chips using a quick dip in some warm soapy water to loosen up the gunk then wiped them down with a damp cloth before letting them air dry on a towel. I did all of the orange and yellow chips in this manner as the gunk is quite easy to spot on these chips.

Second step:
I divided each colour into two piles and oiled one them leaving the other stack dry. After oiling (baby oil was used for this step) the chips, I left them out overnight to dry and soak up any excess oil.

Third step:
I chose 16 chips from each stack (16 oiled orange, 16 unoiled orange, 16 oiled yellow, 16 unoiled yellow) for shuffling purposes. I tend to shuffle chips at my computer both at home and at work using a mouse pad as a base.

The plan:
Shuffle each stack for one week and compare results then share those results with the rest of the Chiptalk community as they are the only ones who would really appreciate this sort of info.

The results after two weeks:

Unoiled
I decided to start with the orange chips, grabbed the unoiled stack, and began shuffling. After a week of constant shuffling at both work and home, these chips are a mess. They look just like they did before I cleaned them and were showing signs of gunk buildup within the first hour of use. The chips would stick together and even shuffling them was becoming more difficult. I was not impressed but was eager to see if the oiled stack would fare any better.

Oiled
Beginning week two, I grabbed the oiled stack of orange chips and immediately noticed a difference in feel. Aside from my fingers feeling nice and soft thanks to the baby oil, the chips were slightly slicker (not a bad thing) and shuffling them was a dream. There was ZERO gunk on my chips after a full week of shuffling. Let me repeat that. My chips were just as clean after shuffling them for several hours a day for a full week. The chips did not stick together and the stack looks as good as it handles.

I will report back once I have tested this with my yellow chips.

Sorry, no pics due to a broken camera.

Cool experiment. Glad to see you got some clear cut results out of it. I'm eager to see the pics when you have a chance to get them up.

Very cool. Thanks for sharing the experiment.

How often do you use them in games? Weekly? Monthly?

And get those Oasis Clubs back in your avatar already!!!!

Re: Oiled chips are happy chips

Throughout the winter, the chips will see action about once a week although they have not seen the felt in quite some time due to other summertime activities.

Regarding the avatar. I am Canadian. It is hockey season. The TR Kings will have to wait their turn.

Alright, that's cool. Maybe I'll put up some Oasis Clubs in my avatar.

Re: Oiled chips are happy chips

I put them all in play that weekend and now they are all covered in gunk again. While the oiled chips stayed clean longer, in the end they will all attract dirt like a magnet attracts metal shavings.

These chips will not stay clean. At least they look, sound and feel great.

Re: Oiled chips are happy chips

I would use mineral oil instead of baby oil. I'm no expert but I've heard that baby oil is a no-no. I have used mineral oil and it works great. Usually have to let the chips dry for at least 12 hours per side depending on how much oil you use. Search around here and there are tons of chip oiling how-to threads.

Huh??? Baby oil is mineral oil plus some fragrance. I'm sure it works fine.

Correct. I would still use mineral oil just to AVOID the fragrance. Poker chips are supposed to smell like fingers, smoke, and beer, not baby bottoms.
