The trick to better pics of chips is not a better camera. Yours is plenty good. Without ALL of these ingredients you will not get good close ups of chips:
1) Good Light. This is extremely important. A direct flash will not work so for a point and shoot the using the flash is out of the question. You must turn it off and rely on other light. Your best bet is going to be to do it during the day and either go outside or go near a window. You won't need direct sunlight, in fact it is probably better if you don't, but a nice bright sunny day really makes your pictures better. If your light is not good enough your pictures will tend to be sort of yellowish.
2) Use the close up or super close up mode on your camera. This is the one with the little flower on it. You NEED to have the camera in this mode or your pictures will be blurry.
3) Use a tripod. You MUST have your camera completely still when taking pictures especially if your light is at all marginal. I have done it without a tripod using books or boxes to prop up your camera in a pinch, but a tripod is best. One of the tiny ones you can get at REI or Gallians for about $5 works really well for chips.
