Progens smell and oil?

I got samples of Progen chips and am seriously thinking of buying a set. My wife says they have a stink to them. A vinegar type smell! I am worried what a couple hundred chips would smell like, probably would end a game quickly.

1) Is there anything you can do to get rid of the smell ?
2) Can you oil these chips? My guess is no as they are not a true clay?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Re: Progens smell and oil?

A friend of mine bought 1000 of them and in a drunken stupor I thought I liked them alot...then we played them the following weekend and I now believe they are worth what you pay for. Not bad or good..just priced accordingly.

Now the smell....my wife is convinced that I'm part dog due to my incessant need to smell things so of course I know exactly what you're talking about. I was playing with 27 people and I seemed to be the only one who wanted to talk about the smell of those chips.

From what I know, these are China made, which makes me worry about that particular chemical smell given the context of China's industrial processes. Don't take this the wrong way, as I've had relatives fall to cancer but I kept saying they smelled like cancer meaning harmful. I also noticed I had difficulty breathing after the game (just kidding...that was due to me being out of shape).

Second, I was joking that they probably have lead paint in them, but in a sorta-joking sorta way.

Anyways, thats my useless rant about Progen odor.

Re: Progens smell and oil?

If these are the same as PI's they are more plastic than clay. Oiling would only make them slick.

Re: Progens smell and oil?

IMO, never buy smelly chips or you will regret it. If it bugs you once you have it will continue to bug you. It really doesn't matter if other notice the smell or not but you will.

I agree with guinness, I try to stay away from China as much as I can. He just didn't want to be bunt about.

Oh BTW, I like the smell of KEM but other players don't. I still play with them. Not like all my players will notice it and pick them up and smell them.

Good luck....

Re: Progens smell and oil?

Yeah, I would wait until you own a few more sample sets to take the plunge with the progens. I have PI's version and they are really inferior to some other budget alternatives. (All-Ins/Sopranos/Cheap Ceramics)

Re: Progens smell and oil?

Thanks, That is a few people now saying I should buy samples of All-Ins/Sopranos or cheap C. Shame. I do like the look of the Progen but not a fan of China products either. Many of my kids toys were recalled so the stink on the chips is a worry.

Better not rush into this....and do my homework for sure.

Re: Progens smell and oil?

You know something funny... People are concerned about the products being made in China because of the recent lead issues...anyone here have a nice set of paulsons or TRK's? I can bet you've got more exposure to lead with those chips than anything off a plastic chip... And that's one to grow on.

Now you know, and knowing is half the battle.

Because reading is fundamental..

Abominable what are you doing? Balancin' my meal!

My ten gallon hat's feelin' five gallons flat, my get and go has got up and went...

Ok...took a weird shortcut down old TV clip lane...sorry, now back to your regularly scheduled program.

Re: Progens smell and oil?

Should have just bought some Faux clays. You would not be having these issues.

That and half my team works in China and although I haven't needed to visit there yet, many of my coworkers have and the stories I hear make me cringe. Theres a reason why 2 of the top 10 most polluted locations on earth are in China. Environmental Helth and Safety laws are lax.
