Storing/displaying sample sets - air tites or flips and binder pages

I NEED to organize all the various single chips and sample sets I have. I originally wanted to use air tites to protect them and store the chips. after having a handful in air tites I am starting to think that they are not the best route to take. Trying to figure out what to do with them after they are in the air tite is kind of a hassle. stacking them is ok at best. they tend to slide off each other and seem very easy to knock over. Putting them in a box doesn't seem right either.
I read the thread that was recently bumped about using flips and plastic binder pages to store, organize, and easily view individual chips. I am curious how many people use that method Vs. air tites. Are there any issues with using flips and binder pages Vs. air tites? any benefits to using air tites Vs, Flips/binder pages

I put up a poll to see the raw numbers for what people are using but would love to hear comments too

The bad part is I already purchased 250 aire tites worst case I will sell them since most are brand new.

Thanks for the input
J

Re: Storing/displaying sample sets - air tites or flips and binder pages

While I really (and I do mean REALLY) wanted to vote for STFU I voted for flips and binder pages. In my experience with airtites, they scratch pretty easily and are difficult (as mentioned) to store in a practical manner. I guess if you are not going to handle them that often like in a permanent display, airtites would be a good choice.

The only thing I don't really like about the binder pages that I have is that there are only 12 squares on each page. I'm borderline OCD and really had a hard time breaking up sample sets of more than 12 or finding sets of 7 and 5, 6 and 6, etc to get them on one page. Crazy, I know.

Re: Storing/displaying sample sets - air tites or flips and binder pages

Air-tites just aren't practical for me since I've got a lot of collectibles. It's easier for me to store them in flips and organize them in binders. I use air-tites for very few chips and mainly when carrying them with me somewhere like a card room to use as a card capper.

Re: Storing/displaying sample sets - air tites or flips and binder pages

Where is the "other" selection?

Flips in binder pages for my collectible casino chips.

Flips in a storage tray for duplicates, traders, etc. I recently found some really neat storage trays at Target with a non-slip surface on the inside bottom of the tray. The flips will stay put (no sliding) without having to fill up the tray. One of these days I'll borrow a camera and post pics.

Sample sets are stored in standard covered chip trays.

One sample set (Egyptians) will be framed for display when I get around to it. In the meantime, they're in AirTites.

My casino collectibles started out with the idea that I would put them in AirTites (direct fit) and use them as bounty chips. Neat idea, but few people in my group want to play with bounties, so there went that idea. I still have the AirTites and use them occasionally.

The chips that I like to use as card protectors are in ring-type AirTites. This size AirTite also works well with Michael Patton's Ankh or Samurai hot-stamped "dealer button" chips, not necessarily to protect the chips (although that's desireable), but for the increased size and weight.

Re: Storing/displaying sample sets - air tites or flips and binder pages

The bulk of my collection is in flips and binders. It's easier to organize, store and view. I keep the more expensive chips in air-tites and are housed in coin boxes. They do make books/pages that hold air-tites, but they are kind of expensive and to me don't look that great. Here is an example of the box:

Good point - I forgot it and don't know how to add it (if it is even possible to add it)

I am glad to hear that I am not the only one who is finding air tites less than ideal. I see so many chips in air tites that I fugred it was the way to go.

Re: Storing/displaying sample sets - air tites or flips and binder pages

Thanks Gmunny. That thread is the one I refered to reading in my OP. I just couldn't remeber where it was located to reference it. It is full of awesome info. I did not subscribe (or post) to it so i did not see the recent updates. Great stuff. I like the coin boxes in the pic below too. Definitely a cool way to store more unqiue chips. I'd be curious to know more about the shleves with grooves that was referenced in your thread.

Now the question becomes what to do with the 250 air tites I have looks like another addition for an M2M thread

If I had any rare or valuable chips, they would be in either in AirTites or in Saflips. (I'm using the Mylar-lined cardboard flips.) AirTites have their place and from what I understand are excellent for safe long-term storage, and they allow us to enjoy using (and showing off) our collectibles as card protectors without compromising the chips. But as you noted, unless you're willing to spend a lot of money on the boxes and holders for AirTites (which also take up more room than a box or tray full of flips), flips do seem to be the way to go.

Re: Storing/displaying sample sets - air tites or flips and binder pages

It's too bad the window on the 2"x2" flips is 1mm to small for a standard size casino chip -38mm. You can get 20 into a page Vs. 12 for the 2.5"x2.5" flips

Only trouble with those is that you can't really appreciate the inserts on the chip edge. They're great for looking down at though.
