what causes clay chips to warp?

i have a rack of some fun nites that i purchased and they are warped. been searching for a while and cant seem to find what actually causes clay chips to warp.

is it from them getting too wet and drying out too quickly, humidity, improper storage, heat, cold, temp. change...? or maybe all of the above.

anyone know the correct answer?

and i guess the next question is what to do to unwarp them?

ive got some ceramic blanks coming to clamp them up but...do i soak them first to soften them up?

I straightened out some warped chips. I used a clamp, 2 ceramic blanks and a hair-dryer. Placed the ceramic on either end of the stack of warped chips. Used the hair-dryer to heat them up on lowest level. Heated them up for about 1 minute, turning the stack so it heats each chip evenly. After heating for about a minute, I let the stack cool for about an hour. Worked like a charm.

I think working with something that is fairly brittle like a poker chip is that you need to be careful not to heat it too quickly and to let it cool completely before doing anything with it. Also, too much pressure before the chip is heated evenly throughout will cause stress and could damage the chip(s).
