Short answer to your question - excessive moisture or heat will warp clay chips.

I've found that high humidity and heat will guarantee a warped chip.

so...there is really no ONE thing. could be excessive heat or excessive moisture or high humidity and heat or any combo listed - and maybe even some sambuka.

Don't ask. | Right!
They say there are three things that survive a nuclear strike:
Roaches, faux clay and Chuck Norris!

Chips: 2,331 | | | Re: what causes clay chips to warp? Honestly, I don't think moisture has really anything to do with it...it is all in the heat. Clays are made of mostly plastic and are susceptible to those things that harm plastics...heat and many different kinds of solvents. In order to un-warp, whatever used needs to be able to affect the WHOLE chip and not just the surface. That's why a solvent (which will only penetrate the surface before causing damage) will not do. The best bet so far has been a slow, low, even heat followed by a long cool down. |

I think clay chips warp because of the combination sunlight/pressure during transportation. Sunlight make the chips very warm and soft while the pressure of the package itself or other packages on top of it force the chips to warp. Just a guess.
