Chips: 50 | | | Oil damaged chips! Snap.... I know better than this, but fell asleep after putting mineral oil on about 100 Pharoes. I oiled them up and stacked them to be wiped off. Then fell asleep for 8 hrs.
The resulting in shadowing on the edges of my pharoes. The blacks got it the worst. I would say 30 percent have fairly noticable shadowing.
Will it delaminate later do you think or is the worst over? I can deal with this much, but if they peel i'll be pissed

We could guess, and if I were to guess, I would say they probably won't peel. I would not be suprised if that oil that got inside on the paper would spread a bit more over time.
Lesson learned, I guess...........

Chips: 50 | | | Re: Oil damaged chips! Snap.... Yep the edges of the inlays.
As nanook said, and I kinda thought this would happen, but the oil has spread inward toward the center. I actually think, either the spreading has made it less obvious or it's lightening a little bit.
Not as bad.
Mineral oil good!

The shadowing should gradually disappear with time. I oiled the new Paulson Shaped Inlay chips and noticed this around the edge of the inlay. It was gone two days later. Since you left yours oiled for a longer period of time it will take longer to disappear.
And, of course, a lot of us will be interested in how long that takes. Give us an update when they start to look better. |

Personally, I submersed my Samurais in batches of ~ 100 for 30-120 minutes each and didn't have any problems, although that might be because I used a very high molecular weight white mineral oil from a university chemistry department (thick like molasses). I probably wouldn't do it again due to the horror stories I've heard... |

Chips: 50 | | | Re: Oil damaged chips! Snap.... The PHAROES are in much better shape 24hrs later. The shadowing has gone down quite a bit.
Still noticable, but not as bad. I think the white inlay helps it to be less of a noticable problem than say a dark inlay.
To clarify: I tried to take a picture to show the problem, but it wasn't that obvious in a picture as it was in person.
If they had oil setting on them for a couple of hours than this would be a non topic I'm betting. It was 8 hours later that was the issue and stacked together keeping it locked in the inlay space.
Hopefully my little science project saves someone a headache later.
I will update tommorrow. |

Chips: 611 | | | Re: Oil damaged chips! Snap.... Try setting your camera to "Digital Macro" mode (if available), then take the photo.
It's better for "close-up" shots where the lens of the camera is very close (less than 1 foot) from the subject.
Macro mode is different from zooming 3x or 4x to get a close-up shot. |
