Oiling Time?

So I just got some BCC T-molds and want to oil them up...How long do you need to let them sit with oil on them before you wipe it off? I think I've read 24 hours some places. Is that true?

I was thinking of dropping them in completely submerged for a few minutes, then taking them out and wiping them off???

thanks,

If you're planning on getting these hotstamped, you may want to wait. I'm not entirely positive, but I think that I remember hearing that you can't send oiled chips in to be stamped.

Maybe check that with BCC before oiling?

No problem, hopefully I'm wrong and you can oil until your fingers fall off! The difference in the colors are amazing when oiled.

I oiled my samples with my hands, just by dipping my pointer finger in the oil and rubbing it on the edges, then the surface of the chip. I let them sit for about 10 minutes until I wiped off the excess oil, then started shuffling them. It made a pretty big difference, even with just that little bit. Hopefully others will have some advice too, as I'm curious to see some better ways of doing it with larger quantity.

Re: Oiling Time?

Just soaking for a few minutes before wiping off will be about right. Soaking for 24 hours is overdoing it.

I concur, 24-hours is waaay to long.

I just used a cotton cloth, get a little oil on it and rub the oil in to the chip... I then wipe off the excess and placed the chips on paper towels for 24-hours.

I did like the way HQ described how he oiled chips, but I cant find the quote.... basically he puts a handful of chips in a bowl.. sprinkles a little oil in the bowl and mixes the chips up with his hands.... after the chips are sufficiently greasy, he wipes the excess off and lays them out to dry.

Re: Oiling Time?

Submerging them in oil is overkill. You definitely wouldn't want to do that with labelled or hotstamped chips. I guess it wouldn't hurt blanks, though...

Re: Oiling Time?

Thanks everyone...I heard back from BCC and he said not to oil until after they are hotstamped. Now I need to decide if I want to hotstamp them or not? And do I want denoms on them? Isn't that an artwork fee for each different denom???

so many choices!

Yes, there is a seperate artwork fee for each denom, but what some have done is a stock denom (no artwork fee) on one side and a custom stamp on the other.
