Faux Clay Dye Process...Part I

This is gonna look familiar....I used the inexpensive method that was devised by WINTERS!! Thanks man, I could not have done these without your ideas and pics!!

For this attempt I had only 11 fauxs to work with {I will be placing an order for more very shortly} for the second attempt I will be using the hot water/RIT dye combo. I will be sure to document that experiment as well.

I had 2 assitants to help with this project my daughter and my nephew...and believe me when I tell you I think he was more excited than I was, especially when he would do a very loud countdown as the timer was reaching zero!!! *EDIT* Of course my daughter was only interested because she wanted a pink chip!!!

I soaked the first batch for 20 min and they turned out pretty good. I soaked the second batch using the same liquid for 35 min and they looked even better. This would be a super economical way to dye these, as long as you have the time and patience to do it....kind of like labelling these babies!!!

Just for the record I don't know how much hydrogen peroxide I used, but I know I used 3/8 tsp of Kool-aid and 1 packet made 2 cups/batches of dyeing liquid. I basically set up the chip and added water until half the chip was covered then dumped it out and added the H2O2 to the same level...I know, its rocket science!

Here is a slideshow of the set up...

I am still working on this...one moment please...

Here are some teaser pics...

Very cool. I especially like the sopranos in the picture. It's like they came over to support thier cousins and check out what was going on.

Thanks for noticing...I actually soaked that one for 35 min... the color didn't take....but it did make this one feel super soft! If you have held a grey 10g soprano and any other color you know what I mean when I say it softer than the others. Well this blue seems to have that texture now. If it stays this way I may end up soaking all of my blues in H2O2!!!

Thanks for all the other comments guys!

Re: Faux Clay Dye Process...Part I

Very nice Captn!

Someone mentioned that the Hydrogen peroxide acts almost like a bleach so it could be lightened the color transfer. I heard vinegar mentioned. Have any around the house. I didn't have any so I could not try it, at least not until I make it to the grocery store!

Re: Faux Clay Dye Process...Part I

Well Winters, I thought about the vinegar...but then I was a little concerned about the smell issue, since these will be handled I thought that with the sweat/heat from peoples hands they may "stir up" for lack of a better word that vinegar scent. I might give it a shot when the new ones come just to try it out!

Here are some scans:

link is to a really large 1024 x 768 version

*EDIT*
I wanted to add that these colors are not a intense in person as the images make them out to be. I think Winters put it best during our discussion that they are "tinted". It seems really hard to describe for some reason, I can tell there pink, but there not as pink as a pink super diamond, if that makes any sense let me know...the h2o2 vapors seem to have gone to my head!

*EDIT* again....I just wanted everyone to know that I know these aren't perfect...I see those "extra" lines of color in certain places where the chip moved, the cup was bumped, etc.....but this was my first trial run. Hopefully the second trial will be even more effective/efficient and PERFECT!

Re: Faux Clay Dye Process...Part I

Okay so this morning I put them under some stress tests. The pink color is not very deep at all. In fact with only 3-4 really hard rubs between the textured face of one faux and the edge of another scraped the color off completely.

Now please do not assume that I thought these would be permanently dyed and that this color would last forever, but I was hoping that it would endure some gently abuse.

I have been playing with them off and on for most of the morning {front to back, shuffling, snapping, etc} and I have not noticed any transfer of color. Which is a good thing because this would be more abuse than most of the chips would see when actually in play...I am the only guy that does any kind of chip tricks. So then as long as I don't get some kind of jack @$$ scraping them together there shouldn't be any color transfer due to normal usage.

One adverse effect, if you can call it that, is that I have noticed that my hands have picked up the scent of the Kool-aid. It is very faint, but I can still smell it.

I will keep playing around with these during the week and give everyone a synopsis along with some pics to see what I am talking about.
