Cold weather and clay chips

I know heat is bad for clay chips...

Should I be worried about cold temperatures with clay chips?

Re: Cold weather and clay chips

Normally things tend to become more brittle (and easier to fracture) at lower temperatures, but it normally needs to be much lower than just 10-20 degrees difference.

I received two sets of chips yesterday and when I opened the boxes they felt like they were 45 degrees. Not freezing, mind you, but cold.

I thought about keeping the case open so they wouldn't "sweat" But they ended up OK as far as I can tell.

I don't know about really cold weather. If oil and general wear (beer spills, liquids, etc) don't impact them much then I wouldn't expect cold weather would mess with them either. Just don't go outside in the ice and start throwing them to the ground or using them to make snowman eyes....

Re: Cold weather and clay chips

I dont think cold does much to clay chips...left my 400 Paulson's in the truck over the weekend at an average -25C with no side effects what so ever. First time out they were cooooooooooooold, but thats about it...stacked just as good as when they were at room temp.

Re: Cold weather and clay chips

I lost a bunch of fauxs that were frozen for a long period of time and fell to the concrete floor. In all about 20 or so were damaged, either cracked or chipped, or even broken in small peices!

They'd 'sweat' less with the cover of the case closed.

Just curious, how long were they frozen for? and how far did they drop?

Re: Cold weather and clay chips

Some materials will bend due to quick changes in temperature. Not sure this is the case with clay chips. I used to be a guitar player and I know that a quick drop or raise in temperature is not good for a guitar. If you subject it to cold weather, perhaps by carrying it around in a guitar case outside during winter time, you need to warm it up slowely by leaving it in the closed case until it reaches room temperature. Optimally it should be stored in 21 degrees Celcius (47 Farenheit) at all times.

Not sure this is any help. I guess it's much different with poker chips. I think heat can do more damage to clay chips than cold.

Matt

Re: Cold weather and clay chips

I won't worry about clay, ceramic, ABS chips that were exposed to cold temp. All of the above material are fairly inert material that should not be affected by normal cold temp that a human can survive.

Well for a period of about 3-4 days the temp was in the teens or lower. They dropped from a table top to the concrete floor, like three feet maybe?
