I got a set of really nasty vintage HH hot stamped chips.
I came here and read all the ways to clean.
Tried the detergent and was not that impressed spent way to much time scrubbing and since no one
POSTED PIC'S I had nothing to go on how dirty your chips were.
I did not want to spend $16.00 on chip cleaner because you get so little.
Then I got to thinking what is that crap on my chips?
It is mostly organic material.
Well I do plumbing and when drains get clogged it it usually full of organic material.
I spend all day telling folks not to put draino, liquid plumber etc down their drains because it eats holes in there pipes.
I recomend a bacteria based product to eat the sludge out of their drains.
So being the smart mother ****er that I am I got to thinking what if I tried pipe sheild on my chips?
And Wala!
Works great!!!!
I soaked my chips varies amounts of time up to 20 hours with no ill effects. edit (do not soak longer than 24 hrs the hot stamp will brush off)
Tried dilluted and straight.
Straight for about 10 hours on these nasty chips was a breeze but as little as 4 did the job with some scubbing.
Only tool I used was a tooth brush but I am going to buy an electric one to save even more time.
A gallon of Roto Rooter Pipe Shield cost 46.95 plus tax.
Dillutied 1 to 4 parts water soaked cleanded chips but not fast enough for me for these ones since I am lazy.
Your milage may very depending on how dirty your chips are.
Hot stamp is not effected in any way even with scrubing it but to stay safe keep thumb on stamp and when done brush a few times, although I did experiment and scrubbed hot stamp vigoriously with no ill effects.
I got each chip down to about a minute of cleaning only because of all the nooks and crannies.
Also the brass flakes turned green and needed a little scrubing but the pipe shield cleand up most of that also.
UPDATE: I just soaked an inlayed paulson for over 48 hours and no problems.
Going into day 3.
SOAKED FOR 5 DAYS AND NO ILL EFFECTS ON INLAY OR CHIP.
Also this does not take black paint off.
SOAKED FOR 9 DAYS HOTSTAMP DID NOT BRUSH OFF BUT HAD TO DO LESS BRUSHING, INLAYS SOME CHIPS GOT A LITTLE BLUE AROUND EDGE BUT BARLEY NOTICABLE BUY ANYONE BUT US.
sOAKING IN WATER TO SEE IF IT GOES AWAY.
What is pipe shield?
It is a bactieria based product.
In short it is living organisim that eat the goo on your chips without damaging them.
I hope this helps someone and I will be conducting more experiments with this.
