Paulson chips are made with a softer clay material than most clay chips and will absorb skin oil much faster than BC's and other clay chips. Like someone already said, even though the short term result will be good it won't really matter in the long run. I wouldn't take the chance with labels that are put on by hand.
I don't quite understand. How does a chip that has been cleaned differ from a new chip? (other than the wear ) Is the oiling just used to increase the sheen and reduce the frictional coefficient? Or does it do something for the longevity of the chip itself?

Depending upon the detergent used, it can dry it out pretty good. After I cleaned a bunch of Grand Casino $1 chips with softscrub w/bleach, they were nice and white but a little dull looking. Hit them with a little oil and they brightened right up and looked fantastic.
I agree with what JM said. When you clean the chips, you actually strip off the surface oil (along with all of the grime). Oiling afterwards simply replenishes it.
I think it is completely understandable and not as absurd as some may make it sound, that there are some chips and some circumstances that oiling the chips may have some benfits - especially in appearance. Why the disbelief? Why the horror? The drama isn't needed.
I will agree that new Paulsons are probably one of the chips that oiling won't be necessary - there may be a small gain in short-term appearance, but that will be it - hardly worth the effort. If you are removing a hotstamp with some kind of cleaning solution - a small bit of oil might be a good idea.
