Cleaning rust from hostamped Paulson chips

I just purchased a large set of uncirculated hotstamped Paulson Hat & Cane chips from the Grand Casino in Gulfport, MS.

I believe these may well be the first casino chips that I'll clean. I hope it will also be the last.

Here are pics of the chips.

Many of the gray chips and some of the oranges and purples have rust on them from sitting in the metal dealer trays that were submersed in water.

I could use some advice. I own Diamond chip cleaner as well as Sterling's Magic. I definitely want to protect the hotstamps as they are just gorgeous and in excellent condition.

I would really appreciate advice from those of you who have cleaned hostamps carefully before.

Re: Cleaning rust from hostamped Paulson chips

I cleaned some other hotstamp chips from this same seller recently. They were the non denominated solid versions and were quite dirty. I soaked them in a 50% diluted solution of **** & span for about 10-15 minutes. I used an old toothbrush to clean them after soaking. I protected the hotstamp by wearing a heavy rubber glove like the ones you use around the house for cleaning and held the chip with my thumb and index finger covering the stamp and brushed the rest as I rotated it around. Flipped it over and did the same thing. That way any brushing hit the gloved thumb and not the stamp. A final one or two strokes across the stamp itself if needed was all it took to clean them nicely. I should say I didn't have any with rust stains though, just grime.

Re: Cleaning rust from hostamped Paulson chips

if it's just the edges, I'd try that "magic eraser" on them. IIRC, those will take a hotstamp off.

Re: Cleaning rust from hostamped Paulson chips

Funny that sp1c isn't an OK word here at CT.

I'm fascinated that the soaking didn't damage the hotstamp by loosening it, etc.

The seller warned me about the rust so I knew what I was getting.

It's mostly the edges. I'm not familiar with a magic eraser product. Do you know any more about it?

Re: Cleaning rust from hostamped Paulson chips

I know they work great for general cleaning tasks and there were a lot of people using them during the initial release of the St. Joes *because* they would take that hotstamp off without harming the inlay.

Re: Cleaning rust from hostamped Paulson chips

Thanks. I'll check it out. I definitely want to avoid any contact with these hostamps and hopefully just get the rust off without discoloring the chips or anything like that.

I imagine that I'm not the only one who got some with rust from the Grand Casino so hope that others who did will read and respond here too.

I received my set today and was wondering the same thing. I'll try the diamond chip cleaner though, and let you know how it goes.

You are a braver sole than I. Thanks for taking the risk.

What did you buy?
