Chips: 1,492 | | | Re: Cleaning rust from hostamped Paulson chips I got a set in trade. I have 160 - $500's, 80 - $1000's and 80 - $5000's. I'm going to try and get 200 - $100's, and 200 - $25's which would be a perfect tourney setup for my games.
I'll toss a 5k or two in the diamond chip cleaner tonight to see what happens. |

I got 720 500s, 120 1000s and 160 5000s. Terrific chips.
Let me know if you'd like to trade some 1k chips for my 5k chips.

Chips: 18,645 | | | Re: Cleaning rust from hostamped Paulson chips Jamby, I just cleaned a couple hundred of the White $1 chips (not the tournament chips), you know, that beautiful chip with the 3-colored inserts. They were real dirty.
I used something different this time -- OxyClean in a pretty high concentration. I mixed it up and let the chips soak for about an hour. The result was amazing! With a toothbrush I was able to easily brush off the remaining gunk from the chip. They came out looking nearly spotless. The white was bright, and the colored inserts also looked great -- no fading. It took much less work/time than any other cleaning method I've used before.
Of course, these were white chips, so I'd test colored chips first but OxyCleasn is supposed to be color-safe. Also, these were inlay chips, not hot stamps, so I'd test one of those, too. But maybe it will work for your chips.
Now for the bad news -- a handful of my chips had rust stains, and I was unable to get them out. The OxyClean helped a little, but nothing else worked very well. So I'll just live with some rust as a Katrina memento. Maybe one of our chemists/engineers can suggest something for rust. |

Chips: 1,006 | | | Re: Cleaning rust from hostamped Paulson chips Random thought - chrome polish will remove rust from chrome bits on a motorcycle, it's possible that it will take it off a chip too. It's also very likely it will beat the hell out of a chip in the process, but it could be worth a try if you've got a rusty chip to sacrifice. The stuff is usually pretty cheap at auto parts stores.
Can we see a pic of a rusty chip? |

Chips: 1,492 | | | Re: Cleaning rust from hostamped Paulson chips Good news is teh Diamond chip cleaner didn't harm the hot stamp at all. The bad news is it didn't touch the rust stains either. On to try something else....
My 5k's are the worst of the bunch with the stains. Next the 500's. The 1k's are damn near perfect. |

Chips: 14,462 | | | Re: Cleaning rust from hostamped Paulson chips Good idea, lets see a pic so we know what kind of problem we're dealing with. I'm thinking its probably not so much a stain but an actual transfer of the rust itself to the chip. If that's the case, then a chemical solution may be the way to go. I'm trying to remember if ferrous oxide reacts with anything like hyrdrochloric acid. A fairly weak solution of that shouldn't hurt the chip but could disolve the rust if brushed on to the spots themselves as opposed to soaking in it. I'll ask one of the scientists I work with if he has any info on what may disolve that compound.
I didn't even notice that it censored the sp1c part of that cleaning product lol.
FYI, here's how some of those yellows looked after cleaning with the politically incorrect cleaner mentioned before...

Chips: 14,462 | | | Re: Cleaning rust from hostamped Paulson chips ok it looks like sodium bisulfite NaHSO3 removes brown rust stains. I also found that hydrogen peroxide may also be effective. The first I don't know where you'd find it, but the second you could get at the drug store. I'd brush it on one of the stains and let it sit for a while till you see a change.

Chips: 1,186 | | | Re: Cleaning rust from hostamped Paulson chips Thanks for all the ideas, suggestions and relaying your own experiences guys. I think I'm going to start by trying the sodium peroxide today.
Here are some of mine with the worst stains. They're hard to get accurately with a scan because most of the rust is on the edges. Hope it shows up well enough to get the idea.
