Re: How important is drying the chip after oiling it?
I've had the halo effect as well on my NPS paulsons.
To me oiling chips is mostly something to do becasue you are impatient and don't want your chips to get the darker/brighter look through use.
I oiled my NPS chips that I use for tournaments and not my NCV, 1 and 5 chips that I use for cash games. I think the chips that I did not oil look better after use than the other chips looked after the oil dried. Plus, it was great fun to see how the non-oiled chips went from slightly chalky and new to the slightly broken-in state that they're in now.
As has been mentioned by members wiser than me, "the chips are only new once."

Of course, that's assuming that you actually have new chips, and not used casino chips with years of gunk on them. Oiling the used chips is essential after cleaning, because it washes away the oil.

I doubt and old casino chips need any oil at all after cleaning.
I have not had any inclination to oil the ones I've cleaned. They look great. Same with well worn home chips.

Re: How important is drying the chip after oiling it?
Just wanted to write about my "post ASM oiling" observations:
The chips arrived on Monday.
We oiled and "padded dry" our brand new ASM's on Tuesday.
We let them sit out all night on beach towels.
They seemed a little greasy still on Wednesday after work as I was putting them into the racks.
I spilled them out of the racks, and let them sit out on towels, this time with fans blowing on them for another 24 hours and put them away on Friday morning.
We played with them on Saturday night and there was NO GREASY FEELING WHATSOEVER and everyone marveled over the look and feel of the chips.
So at least with new ASM's go ahead and oil away (with Mineral Oil), but more important than "drying" them, from what I've seen, just giving them time to "soak in" is the key.

I used "shop towels" to dry my chips. You can buy them from the auto parts store. They look like paper towels. They are blue and come on a roll. They are suppose to be used to wipe motor oil off your hands. They are the best! Far superior than any paper towel or rag. I did mine one at a time and wiped them down with the towels until they were bone dry.
