I've started putting together a collection of old-ish casino chips. Most of them are fairly dirty from years of use, storage, what-have-you. Should I be leaving them as is, or give them a quick clean with the ole' Magic Eraser? Am I affecting the value in a negative way by cleaning them? What do you collectors do, I'd like to hear from you.
Thanks in advance!

If you are reselling on ebay my experience is that they bring more money clean.
Some collectors are against this but I have seen the collectors pay more for the clean chip so who knows?
If intending to sell or trade, don't clean. My hunch is that collectors paying more for cleaned chips are unaware that they've been cleaned and are assuming they're just in really great shape.
Personaly I like my chips to look their best. The ones I sell and the ones I collect.
But like Jamby there are alot of collectors who do not believe in this process. The chips should be left in their condition.
The other thing that collectors differ on opinion is to oil and not to oil.
I love mine clean as well. Each new chip that I get I make sure there is no black gunk on the edges and if so I clean them up with soap and water. Some of the really bad ones I will clean with non acetone nail polish remover.
I do not clean old chips my self but I know that I have bought a lot of them cleaned. It is not that big deal to me but I prefer them as they are.
I have been removing some hotstamps though.
I only have a few older chips (I like using them in airtites for card guards) but I don't like the dirt. It's mank from people's hands, I really don't want to think about it.
Perhaps if I just collected them and put them in a binder or similar, I may not clean them, but I don't want a filthy chip sitting in front of me all night when playing.
