Chips: 336 | | | Nexgen Chip Sanding Nexgen Chip Sanding On the advice of a fellow forumer, I’ve chosen to sand my Nexgen Originals in order to get rid of their annoying slickness and reduce their plasticy feel. Below are a fun series of video clips (please use internet explorer to view) which include the actual sanding process, and a series of tests to compare them to the non sanded nexgens, for looks, slickness and stackability.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------- How it's done http://www.medicinefilms.com/player.php?clip_id=186328 A semi long process which you use fine grit sand paper to sand your Nexgen poker chips in order to get rid of the slickness. Take 220 grit sand paper. Press chip flat on paper and swirl around the paper in a circular motion approx 4-5 rotations. Use a good amount of preasure. Wipe chip with damp cloth or rinse in warm water. The result is a chip with the classic Nexgen good looks, and the stackability closer to a clay chip. (not really comparable to clay)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Looks http://www.medicinefilms.com/player.php?clip_id=186331 You can see here the cosmedic impact sanding has on these chips. Sanding flattens the crosshatched texture of these chips, but only minorly. The "Las Vegas Nevada USA" mold is much more visible as sanding fades the outer rim. The fading is less obvious on the neutral color chips (yellow, black & white) and more obvious on the bolder color chips (green, red, blue, purple) The chips on the left hand stack have been sanded. In the video the chips on the right hand stack have not been sanded. You can see the visible difference. The above pic with two chips in my hand, the chip closest to my thumb hasn't been sanded and the other has. The large stacks above have all been sanded. The 3rd pic shows a close up of the visual impact sanding has on each of the 7 colors. The forth and fifth show sanded chips on the left, and the non sanded equivilant on the right.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You'll see here a stack of unsanded Nexgens. I'm giving them a little swirl to replicate the motion commonly used when betting, but at a faster rate to test their slickness. You'll see that they move around quite freely and fall easily.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Test 1 pt 2 - swirl (after) http://www.medicinefilms.com/player.php?clip_id=186335 You'll see here a stack of sanded Nexgens. Again, I'm giving them a little swirl to replicate the motion commonly used when betting, but at a faster rate to test their slickness. You'll see that the sanded Nexgens stick together much better than the non sanded ones.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------- Test 2 - Table Lift http://www.medicinefilms.com/player.php?clip_id=186338 You’ll see here a stack of sanded Nexgens on the left, and a stack of non sanded Nexgens on the right. I’m lifting my table gradually to demonstrate the slickness of the non sanded chips, compared to the sanded ones. The sanded ones just won’t spill. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Test 3 – Stack Toss http://www.medicinefilms.com/player.php?clip_id=186339) Here you’ll really see the difference in slickness between sanded Nexgens and non sanded ones. I’m tossing a stack as if I was throwing it into a pot. You’ll see the non sanded ones slide quite far and the sanded ones don’t seem to move farther than they’re thrown. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Test 4 - Table Nudge http://www.medicinefilms.com/player.php?clip_id=186340 This is a more practical test to compare sanded Nexgens to non sanded ones. On the left is a stack of sanded Nexgens and on the right is a stack of non sanded Nexgens. I’m trying to simulate typical tapping, banging and nudging of a poker game. Mine is more shakey than your average table, as it’s just a top, on a coffee table. You’ll see the sanded Nexgens don’t spill at all and only slant, as the non sanded ones spill quite easily.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sanding 500 chips took approx two, one hour sessions. All of the above videos don’t prove a whole lot and are a product of my boredom. However, I felt obligated to share this with my fellow chip mongers as it gives these otherwise slick, plastic feeling Nexgens, more of a clay feel, and I like these chips much better now that they’ve been sanded. --<Please try this at your own risk! If you’ve tried it, post what you think of the sanded chips!>

I'm thinking this would make an interesting article. If you wanted, I could host the videos on my website. Some still pictures would be nice, particularly to show the difference in surface finish between the sanded and original chips.
If you're willing to turn it into an article, submit a draft to jojobinks. If he approves it, we can help you with the editing and get it published on the site. Writing an article is an excellent way to contribute to the site, and earn some chiptalk chips (redeemable for cool stuff).

And it would be nice if you could take a good closeup picture of the sanded and regular chips, because I could barely see the difference in the video. Really cool post though, +4 to you! |
