Many thanks,
G$ | I had the same issue with the ink smearing when using the toothbrush. That's why I went to simply using cotton balls with nail polish remover on them (just like the wife does with her nails). It works fast, all I do is use a circular motion on the foil then after it disappears I wipe it off with a cloth. You can use 1 cottonball for 2 chips, one chip with each side of the cottonball. You could use it on more chips but I found that the ink starts to go back on the chips, then you have to use a new cottonball to get the ink off again. |

I have used it to clean my St Jos chips. Check the pictures I uploaded from the previous post.....
The gold foil came right off. Just rubb the goldfoil with a cotton piece soaked in alchol..
Afterwards I oiled them with babyoil. The alchohol doesnt seem to have had any side effect on the chips either...
So why not use the good old friend, alchohol for removing the gold foil? |

The alcohol i used.. | I did see your pics, but I don't think what you used and what I suggested are the same things ... what you used is ethanol and what I said was regular rubbing alcohol ( isopropyl) ... maybe isopropyl WILL remove gold foil from cheaper stamped chips, but I've used it to clean stamps on TR Kings and Blue Chips and the stamp hasn't come off ... |

If any of the liquid gets on the inserts you can remove it with a fresh q-tip and more nail polish remover. You will need a new q-tip every other chip. Once complete, you can barely tell the chips were hot stamped.
| Were you able to get rid of the black hot stamp too? I was able to remove the gold with isopropyl alcohol... but not the black stamp |

Chips: 153 | | | Re: Easiest way to remove gold foil? I got a rack of new $0.50 chips from thechiproom a couple of weeks ago. BTW, Great hot pink color, and Chiproom people are great to deal with.
Anyhoo, I first tried soaking the chips in hot water and H.E. Tide, and then scrubbing with a tooth brush. That took forever with little result. THinking to myself, there's got to be a better way, I then fired up a Dremel with a buffer bit. Also tried the brush bit. Hmmmmm, both created divits in the inlay because I have crappy feathering skills. I also inhaled more pink Paulson dust than I care to on any given evening. So much for that.
So I logged into CT. Didn't want to buy nail polish remover. It's like $7 at my local drug store--it's the principle of it all. I wasn't in the mood to hunt down a "magic eraser" either.
So I tried the isopropyl alcohol, aka, the rubbing alcohol in my medicine cabinet. I liberally applied several drops of the alcohol onto 4 chips at a time. Must be a bit generous, otherwise the alcohol will dry too fast, and you are back to sqaure 1.
Let them soak a bit. The longer you wait, the easier it is to rub off. But of course, don't wait 'til the alcohol dries.
I used Q tips, and the gold foil basically game right off. More or less about 1 Q tip per chip. The black MO Gaming Commission stamp took some extra elbow grease, but eventually came off too. The only collateral damage in using alcohol is that some of the original St. Jo $0.50 stamp also gets removed--Some chips more than others. I cleaned off an entire rack in about two hours, which means that it took 1.2 minutes, or 72 seconds per chip to clean. That night, I sucked in a lot of isopropyl fumes.
One will also notice the hotstamper made a slight circular mark on the inlay if you take care to notice. Since these chips were ran through the hot stamp machine, a stacked colum may tend to sway and is less steady than an un-hotstamped stack of Paulsons. It bothers me a little, but I don't lose sleep over it.
So before you spend $4 on a magic eraser, or $5 on polish remover, may I suggest spending $1.99 on alcohol and $3 on Q tips. No need to buy a Dremel. |

My bottle of non-acetone nail polish remover at Longs Drug store cost 99¢ (on sale from $1.50). And it removes the hotstamp in about 10 sec. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
