Secret factory oiling technique revealed

The Burt Company was the first chip maker to oil chips. I think they started in the 1960's. This is the method used by the Burt Company: fill an empty Coke bottle with 10-30 motor oil and apply the motor oil to a rag; grab a stack of chips (15 or 20) in the left hand and with an oil rag in your right hand apply a liberal amount of oil to the edge of all the chips in the stack; rotate the stack to insure complete coverage; wipe off any excess oil with a clean rag. THE FACTORY NEVER OILED ANY OTHER PART OF THE CHIP. This is the sole factory authorized method of oiling chips.

ASM has replaced motor oil with mineral oil which gives a cleaner finish.

Wow! I guess I don't feel so badly using Canola Cooking Oil, hahaha.

Re: Secret factory oiling technique revealed

Funny, I would think they'd prefer the higher viscosity of a 10w-40. Personally I only use Mobil 1 synthetic, but I've heard good things about Redline.

Re: Secret factory oiling technique revealed

for those 8 cylinder chip stacks

mobile1 - your killing me - LOL. literally = please dont put any motor(moron) oil on chips.

i'd recommend sticking your head stack underwater, prior to oiling chips with 10-30....

Re: Secret factory oiling technique revealed

Well you figure you're probably not playing poker in really high temperatures, so I imagine the lower viscosity 10w-30 or even 5w-30 for those in canada would be perfect. You wouldn't want to use the synthetic mobil 1 on any chips with over 50,000 miles though. That'll be nothing but problems!

I thought for sure this was going to finish something like "and then Frank and Dino would ask Rocko to take the Coke bottle to Reno in the back of an old Packard filled with the smoke from 316 Chesterfield cigarettes. Once there have Bubbles blow on 'em for luck, then use half a can of Campbel's Cream of Mushroom Soup to even out the edges, etc. etc. etc."

Re: Secret factory oiling technique revealed

Man I'm so glad I read this thread. I was about to oil my 1255 pharaohs with mineral oil; man what a jerk I would have felt like if I'd gone through with that. I'll have to grab some motor oil on the way home. I'm signing off right now to go do that. I'll post my awesome pics later.

Re: Secret factory oiling technique revealed

That "official" technique seems a bit over-restrictive to me...
I'd expect that putting the oil in a Pepsi bottle would work just as well.
