Re: How to care for Pharaoh's

No problem, its great to be able to get good advice, as well as personal stories about what todo, or not to do.

I think that I will find a nceway to display these chips, protect them from the sun and enjoy them.

Re: How to care for Pharaoh's

Take a look here. At the bottom of the page is the result of a little steam on a Paulson. Heat=bad.

I liked that they held one with needle nose pliers in a column of steam. What, it actually melts.. lol

Yeah, it melts. How 'bout that? Think about that the next time you see a post talking about 'real clay' or 'ceramic' in a chip .

Question Re: How to care for Pharaoh's

I just ordered a large set of Paulson Pharaoh’s. I have been handling a sample set for some time and have noticed that when chips of different colors are rubbed together the colors transfer from one chip to the other. Of course it is most noticeable on the lighter of the two chips rubbed together – most notably the white ($1) and the orange/yellow ($1000).

I read somewhere online that one way to break-in these chips is to place all of the chips of the same color into a pillowcase and shake them up for a while – Carefully – to put some wear on the corners and simulate time-in-play.

My question is whether that is a good idea or not, and whether it would reduce the off-color transfer once the chips were subsequently put into play. It seems to me that this color transfer is worse than expected because of the wider mold design, and that maybe wearing down some of the linen finish before mixing colors would reduce the color transfer.

I have read the opinions on this thread regarding oiling the chips, but am wondering if oiling would have any effect on this color transfer issue?

Or am I being overly protective? Should I just let the colors bleed naturally?

Re: How to care for Pharaoh's

Here is my 2˘:

Do not shake clay chips in a pillowcase. The only thing it will do is ding up the edges. It is not going to do what you want it to do as far as breaking them in.

Do not let clay chips get too hot. I did exactly what PocketRocket suggested you not do. Last summer I had some ASM's in my car on a very hot day. I'm sure in the sun inside the car with the windows up it was probably like 120 degrees in the car. Some of the chips warped quite badly. Luckily, they were only samples and I only had a few in there.

Oil or no oil. It does take time, but will make your chips look nicer.

Transfer of colors. Just forget about it..... In playing conditions, your chips will get dirty from the grime on peoples hands faster than the color will get transferred from one chip to another of a different color. I think that most of the concern about this came about from everyone shuffling sample chips of various colors. It won't happen that way in real life.

Re: How to care for Pharaoh's

please...keep your chips away from pillowcases.

they'll break in. shuffle them at the computer while you play. stack 'em, shuffle em, handle them, while watching tv.

host games whenever possible.

but don't abuse them. love them!

Cool Re: How to care for Pharaoh's

Thanks!

I'll leave the pillowcase in the bedroom and spend some extra time shuffling the chips!

I haven't decided about oil. So probably not, since it can always be done later. I might oil my samples and see how they compare with the rest before making any commitment.

Re: How to care for Pharaoh's

I originally wanted to "speed up" the process of wear on my new Paulsons, just to get rid of that brand new feel. After reading many posts here, I was awakened to the idea that they will only have that crisp edge once, and that I should enjoy the process of wearing them in naturally. I did, however, oil them...and frankly it brightened them a bit. But since they were new, there wasn't any big change.
