"Stud poker" by John Francome
"Winning 7-card stud..." by Ashley Adams
"Seven card stud for advanced players" by David Sklansky, etc.
Those should better than Super Systems I or II. |

Chips: 545 | | | Re: Best Book For A New Stud Player I second the motion for Roy West's book. Good all-around stuff. Saved me much more money than it cost. (my copy's getting a little dog-eared - may need a fresh one)
The Advanced Players book from 2+2 is also excellent, if a little dry. |

Chips: 72 | | | Re: Best Book For A New Stud Player The best way to get good at a game like Stud (especially) is experience. Learn to play the game at the tables. Most books are gonna say the same thing over and over, "Only play this, don't play this, etc." and that won't really teach a whole lot. With that said, the best introduction you get to Stud IMO would be Chip Reese's chapter in SS1. I'd say start at smaller stakes just learning the game, and get a feel for it before you jump into bigger games. All Stud games are based on experience at the table, not memorizing what hands to play when (although that is important... but again Chip can teach you all of that pretty fast in SS1). |

Chips: 5,913 | | | Re: Best Book For A New Stud Player The Stud book in the for advanced players series by 2p2 is bar none the best stud book out there. it should be required reading for anyone taking stud seriously. http://www.amazon.com/Seven-Card-Adv.../dp/188068523X
the SS1 chapter is ok, but it leaves a lot to be desired. It would help to give a basic understanding of stud, and give you a few plays in your arsenal. But it wouldn't give you the deep understanding and analysis that the above linked book would.
Stud for Advanced Players is without a doubt the book you should pickup, as a few others have already said.
hope that helps and gl at the tables. |

Chips: 7,134 | | | Re: Best Book For A New Stud Player Read the 7 Card Stud section of Super System. Seriously. It's only like 40 pages, but it's the bible on Stud.
I have 7CSFAP and decided to start reading it last year. I got through about 80 pages and said to myself, "this is like a really long, dry version of Chip Reese's 7CS section in SS." I got to the Sixth Street chapter and just stopped. It wasn't worth it for $1/2 Stud.
I would read the SS section, and then get 7CSFAP if you really, really want to get into the theory behind the game (i.e. if you move up to the higher limits). The people in low-limit Stud games are incredibly stupid, and you should be able to crush those games without reading 7CSFAP.
Just get ready for lots of horrible beats. Don't be discouraged. |

Amen to that. Enough highs and lows (no Stud8 pun intended - don't get me started ) at the low limits to make you question your existence.
Play patient, keep count of the boards.
Oh, and as Roy West said, "Play happy, or don't play." | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
