NLHETAP Discussion -- Part Two (45-81)

This thread is to discuss NLHETAP pages 45-81 starting July 19, "ending" July 20. (Discussion obviously may continue beyond the end date, but we will be moving on to a new part.)

Although the previous thread is still going strong (with a recent VERY interesting post by SpeakEasy), I am starting the new discussion thread.

The main focus of this section is bet sizing, and I think that some of the ideas S&M present have already been discussed in the first thread, especially the idea of trying to make the bet with the highest expectation

I have no good question to start the discussion, so I will just shut up and see what others have to say (and I notice that despite the late hour, there are still some of you out there!).

Re: NLHETAP Discussion -- Part Two (45-81)

Okay, after reading up to page 58, I have a question...

Is hand-reading important in no limit hold'em?

Re: NLHETAP Discussion -- Part Two (45-81)

Heh. Yeah, you'd have to get the idea that hand reading has some value.

I've read the book through once completely and now am going through reading #2. The bet sizing part was very useful to me in clarifying how to approach a hand from the flop on. It's clear enough that we may not really have that many questions.

The idea of playing the hand backwards in order to ensure that the ultimate goal of getting all the chips in by the river was new to me but makes complete sense. I've done that now in 3 or 4 cash game sessions online and managed to get paid off at least twice. Perhaps I would have even without the info but it was cool to know exactly how I should look at the hand strategically to maximize profit.

I'm willing to bet that people just haven't read it yet. I thought I'd be able to but then stuff comes up, etc, etc. I plan on reading it tonight though.

Re: NLHETAP Discussion -- Part Two (45-81)

So the only things that really caught my attention from the bet sizing section were #6 - If your opponent might make a second-best hand that would cause him to lose a lot on the river, it may be better to keep him in the hand, and #7 - Ignore the number of outs your opponent might have if you think he has a hand that he believes may be better than yours without improvement.

They only caught my eye because I think the situations they apply to are so rare that they aren't really even worth committing to memory. The only time #6 really applies is when you have a set on a double-suited board. Otherwise, you're not usually going to get someone to pay off their stack. Okay, sometimes someone will make a straight with a card that makes you a flush, but it's not really the same situation since you don't have a hand you think is best on the turn.

The only time #7 really applies is when you raise with a junky hand like a smallish suited connector and are re-raised by a tight player. You call and the flop comes 7 6 2 and you have 76s. You think your opponent has an overpair and you don't need to worry about blowing him out of the pot. It's not a very common situation, but probably more common than #6.

I'm grasping at straws here for something to talk about. Discuss.
