I read 2+2 and so "stole" this idea from them (OK, was inspired by them): they have been doing book discussions for a while. But I thought a CT discussion would be a good idea: 2+2 can be too unwieldly.
I thought we would not start immediately to give everyone a chance to get the book. Full title is No Limit Hold 'Em: Theory and Practice by David Sklansky and Ed Miller (published by 2+2). It should be widely available at local mega-bookstores and Amazon.
For those who haven't seen this book, it is not a beginner's book at all: it assumes you not only know how to play nlhe and understand pot odds, but that you also know what terms like implied odds and ev (expected value) mean. If you don't, you will have trouble. (That is not to say you need to understand them as well as speak or jojo: just that you understand them somewhat.) If you need a refresher, I would suggest reading the relevant sections in Small Stakes Hold'Em (SSHE) -- I certainly plan to review those before starting. And if anyone else has a better suggestion about what to review before starting NLHETAP, please weigh in here.
My plan for now is to divide the book into sections, assign a section, and then start a thread for discussion of that section. (Jojo kindly offered to help organize this, so I will rely on his help!) I don't want to clutter up the board with too many threads, but I also don't want to make one confusing big thread. This will also make it easier to find relevant sections for future review.
Would Thursday (July 13) be enough time for everyone to get the book? Or should we stick with my original idea of next Monday (July 17)? |

Okay, let's start off with INTRODUCTION.
I think this is a good introduction. Maybe one of the better ones from a 2+2 book. I personally feel that the introduction to Hi/Low Split for Advanced Players is the greatest introduction in 2+2 history, but this one makes for a close race. I like the way that the authors clearly lay out their greatness and goals for the book. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
