Can anyone recommend a good strategy book that goes beyond the very basics of the game and into reading players, what hands to play, when to play them and betting strategies for tournament and cash games?
I haven't read either of these, but always hear praise for TJ Cloutier's Tournament Practice Hands, and Harrington on Hold'em 1 & 2. Greenstein's Ace on the River, I believe deals a lot with player insight. GL
Theory of Poker (Slansky) and the Harrington on Holdem Vol 1, 2 are what I would consider must reads for anyone reading poker books, start with those and you cannot go wrong......seriously, if everyone who comes across this threads actually posts a good chunk of those posts will likely include these books. However it is more likely they will see the books have already been mentioned and will not bother to post again, but a LOT of guys have these in their libraries.

if you're interested in limit hold 'em, definitely pick up "Texas Hold 'Em for Advanced Players" by Sklansky/Malmuth, along with "Winning Low Limit Hold 'Em" by Lee Jones.
I agree that Low Limit Hold 'Em by Lee Jones is awesome. I have the 2nd edition, wish I had the 3rd. I actually find it better than the Sklansky/Miller Small Stakes HE. I'm anxious for the new Two Plus Two books to come out this month and through the summer.
