30¢ Compression Clay from PI - Design Contest Round 3

Greetings and welcome to Round 3 (The Semi-Finals).
This poll will run for five days (I was going to make it shorter, but had to account for the holiday weekend.) Voting will end on May 25.

The short version is Joe at Palm Imports will let us steal his Compression Clay Great Wall chips (also known as Wallsons) for just 30¢ each! The only catch is that we have to steal 50,000 of them. To help make this project a success, Joe is also sponsoring a design contest to come up with a label that will appeal to enough people to make this happen.

Rounds 1 and 2 got us some great designs that you can see below. We will continue thru two more rounds in a 4 – 2 – WIN series of eliminations.
The primary forum for discussing this Group Buy is located here;
http://www.chiptalk.net/forum/palmim...n-clay-pi.html

UPDATE (5/24): The Denomination Poll is complete! The winners are .25 and 10!
There seems to be a consensus for 1, 5, 25, 100, 500, 1000, 5000, NCV (this is eight of the ten chips). To help determine the final two I have start a poll http://www.chiptalk.net/forum/group-...tion-poll.html . This will run for 4 days

This poll will run for five days (I was going to make it shorter, but had to account for the holiday weekend.)

We had many great designs on Round 2 and the choices are just going to get more difficult as this progresses.

Thank you everyone!
Shane

Re: 30¢ Compression Clay from PI - Design Contest Round 3

I have to say that in round one I didn't think much of Feen's Hotel LaSiesta but in each round the design grows on me more and more.

I love how the inlay perfectly matches the colours of the chips. The design is clear, bright and cheerful. The denoms stand out really well and are easy to read.

I think the design matches the colour scheme and mold of the chips perfectly.

Garyon's design seems more cluttered. The denoms don't stand out nearly as well and overall the design doesn't seem to match up with the mold and the edge spots. The design just seems too fancy for the style of the mold and the edge spots.

The four suits design is also nice. Simple and clear with a touch of class. The denoms stand out well. I just wish the inlays picked up the colours of the chips more.

Turner Profft's design is too geometric for my taste though the design does seem to go with the style of the mold/spots.

The sharpest feature of this design is the small ring around the inner inlay that alternates with the spot colours. It's a small feature but it really does help match the inlays to the chips.

I think Private Cardroom is over-emphasized and distracts from the denoms. The Private Cardroom text size should be reduced a point or two and it might look better if the text colour matched one of the edge spots, which would also help emphasive the denoms over the text. Maybe it's just a trick of the eyes or choice of the outline colour on the text but the Private Cardroom text on the .25, 1, 100 and 500 seems to be in bold font or slightly larger than the other chips. Especially when you compare the "I"'s and "E"'s of the 500 to the 1000, 5000 and NCV chips.

Due to the way we're getting to the final design, shouldn't we get 2 votes here? Either way, I voted.

Re: 30¢ Compression Clay from PI - Design Contest Round 3

All great designs - kudos to the designers.

Some of these designs rely heavily on being able to accurately match the printed label colors to the chip base color. Imagine what they would look like with color variation.....

See this picture from another thread (http://www.chiptalk.net/forum/custom...rogen-80s.html).

Although these are Progen 80s I think they have the same raw material colors as the Palm Imports chips. Also these labels were from a different supplier. However, I think that it serves to illustrate the challenges in matching the chip colors in the labels.

Personally, I'd appreciate hearing from Joe on how confident he is that his new printing facility in China will be able to match the colors, before I vote.

Joe, is this possible?

good question- while we can crtainly color match here- whether china can is the question- they work in CMYK since they use offset printing equipment and NOT ink printers which are in fact RBG devices-
so actually I THINK if we do the artwork in cmyk we will get pretty much what the artwork renders

Of course we will have some tests done prior to running 50,000+ chips
Joe

CMYK? Ouch ... that probably would have been good to know a little earlier

I will have re-do my designs in CMYK. Hopefully that won't change things too much.

Will have new updates in the next day or two ...
