I am not a legal expert. However, I think that this project needs to be careful of copyright which would be an issue using Google images as you suggest, since most of those Google images are copyright. Copyright will be an issue because this is going to be used for a significant number of chips for multiple customers, there will presumably be profit made by suppliers (even at Joe's really keen price
) and Joe wants to be able to pass surplus chips to his vendors if the GB doesn't attain his target minimum (50,000 chips).
Therefore, I suggest using images from Wikimedia or similar sources that are either free use or licensed for both private and commercial use. Such as:
- No restriction,
- Public Domain
- Creative Commons Attribution
- GNU Free Documentation license
In the latter two cases, while the licenses are detailed, the general concept is that people may use the images freeely, including for commercial use, provided that they do not place a copyright on the derivative work. In other words, if you post your images on Chiptalk then you can't stop anyone from using them (although you could watermark and/or post only low-res images).
The respective licenses are defined on each image's Wikimedia web-page when you click thru to get the best resolution copy.
Also, I think it is reasonable that Joe should be able use this design for subsequent commercial use, since he's going to the effort of facilitating this buy and sponsoring the prize for the winning design. This, however, will need the agreement of the winning designer. Joe, you may want to clarify expectations in this area.
As I said, I'm no expert so please chip in (
pun intended) if I've got someting wrong or if anyone can add further pointers.
