Chips: 137 | | | P* Deepstack.... how long for tourney? Yesterday, I was home from vacation, sitting around my condo doing laundry so I decided to play in a $10+$1 deepstack tourney on P* (5,000 starting stack). There were 1,371 entries. I'm typically a cash player, I will occasionally play a single table SNG. I had nothing to do for hours yesterday and rather than jump up and down at a cash table I figured I'd play tight aggressive in a tourney and figured I'd be folding 90% of the time preflop. So for the first hour I'm hovering around my starting stack, then begin to add chips until I've got about 12k. After about two hours the tourney leader ends up at my table, he's got 49k (to my 12k). He plays the aggressive role, whenever 4 or 5 limp or make a 3x raise, he auto raises 20x. He accumulates chips a bit, whenever someone does call, it's one of two scenarios- He folds if he misses or goes all in. He will occassionally;;y also go all-in when someone raises... So I'm in the cutoff (it's been two hours and my ADD is kicking my ass) and I get dealt AK os, I raise 3x (blinds about maybe 75/150). Big stack on opposite side goes all in...I say screw it, I figure he's just being aggressive trying to steal and I call. He's got QQ...flop comes AKx and I double through him... I continue to play tight aggressive and knock out the bigstack and become chipleader about 3 hours in. I stay top five for the next 2 and a half hours, accumulating, taking a few hits but always bouncing back. nearing 6 I realize I've got to go...still in top 10 and in the money with 200 players to go... It ell the table, "Well see you later" and sit out and finish 53rd.
I guess I've got two questions... DO these things always take 8+ hours? and....I'm wondering if my first shot at a big tourney was a fluke. My only all-in was the one time with the AK... I think I have some patience, but damn....it takes forever! People were looking me up, because they were curious who I was, I had no registered tournies on any databases under my current name (about 5 months old) so they had no info on me. Is there a happy medium, where I can get in a tourney for three hours that's deepstacked? I do like the DS format, you can be patient and pick your spots and use position rather than trying to make something out of nothing. So I cashed at my first DS, for a whopping $23 and change... I really thought I might have a chance to make it to the final tables, but you never know, had I not sat out, boredom could have crept in and had me out in 150th place...

They do take that long, you need the patience of a saint - I struggled a wee bit, at least if you play live poker for 10 hours there's people to chat with etc, in front of a computer it can be a bit testing. I like the idea, but I find I get bored and well, that just ain't profitable... But I would play one again if I had the time.
There are a couple of threads about these. http://www.chiptalk.net/forum/online...ep-stacks.html

Which was my effort not that long ago. |

I was playing only one table, I just did not realize it would go 11 hours.

But as my OP stated I was doing other things, so one table tourney gave me time to bounce around my place doing other things. I played fine, just ran out of time. I was listening to weeks worth of Stern to occupy my time and watching the planet earth nat'l geo thing in HD.

In a tourney like that, I think multi tabling can be a double edged sword - you spend longer with the table you start with (vs most online tourneys) and there actually is time to try and get to 'know' your opponents a bit (much as how the OP describes the big stack), whereas if you're away at a cash game everytime you fold, you'd never see all that.
That said, if it keeps you more focused, it could be a good thing. |
