BankRoll hurdles

venting dont read if ya dont wanna

This is a hard thing to discribe and right now my friends arnt being really any help. Anyways to the point. I'm a micro player, not really wanting to deposit money so i've toughed out the donk freerolls to cash. dime tournies then the .02/.04 limit to the penny limit etc etc. anyways I seem to hit a road block every time at about the $75 mark where i just go on a month to two month down swing to go broke and start the cycle over again.
I've gone through this about 5 times and I'm just fed up with it. once playing pure SnGs most of the time playing cash tho.

I think the one reason my friends don't understand where i'm coming from is because they have had much greater online success than me. With one's recent wins and multipul FTs at Razz and last nights take down in the $5 rebuy for $1700 he shipped $15 my way. I decided to have fun with it and not take it seriously. I hit a .10/.25 and brought it up to $30.

Next session i played I brought my $15 buyin to $40 next pot would get me past this $75 road block. I get KK and end up losing a $30 to 99 after he pushes to my raise on the flop of 478. w/ runner runner 5 6. small down set after about 2-3hrs and winning alot of small pots back to $40 i catch QQ w/ a flop of QT6... allin i call QQ vs 66 river 1 outer 6 for quads knocks me down to 10 i leave a 5.5-6hour session with $12.

I'll probably take a week break from online as i'm semi-tilt fearing that i'm going to get stuck at the $75 mark tahts been plaguing me for over 2years now. Its been really depressing that i fail to have online success when i've done fairly decent live... netting probably a $700 profit overall home and casino games i've played over the past two years.

Re: BankRoll hurdles

How much time do you invest in online poker? It sounds to me like you play semi occassionally; not really logging many hours in each day as do I and countless others. If my notion is correct, that you are a very part time player, I don't think you have a whole lot to be upset about. If you feel confident in your game I would recommend that you make that painful deposit and start logging some more time and perhaps play some higher stakes. Sure, you could perhaps take a very small bankroll and grind it into something significant, but, the more money you invest in each sng/cash session provides the opportunity for bigger gains. Thats my take on the situation. Perhaps someone else (jojo?) will come along with some worth while advice....Good luck

Re: BankRoll hurdles

i play about bi-daily probably or whenever there isnt anything else going on. probably at 4hours at a time really. I took a 2 month break from online as i was tired and bored of the freeroll grind. mostly in the 11pm-5am time range as i need something to do when i cant sleep

Re: BankRoll hurdles

Your problem is you are playing massively under-rolled. Even the best players will go through down swings/ times when they are running bad, the difference is they have bankrolls with enough buy-ins to handle it. If you only have $75 it wont take much of a downswing to lose it all.

I'd suggest depositing a reasonable amount (£300) and grind it out at 10NL, or if you want to play lower at 4NL deposit $120ish, give yourself around 30 buy-ins as a minimum.

Obv this advice hasnt touched on your game, obv if you are making -EV moves and plays then you are going to lose your roll eventually every time.

So my advice:

Practice good bankroll management
Play solid Poker

and just for good measure, if you go on a rampage of monkey tilt turn off your computer

Re: BankRoll hurdles

I can only echo what has been said on here, especially bankroll management.

Hypothetically, let's say that there was no blinds, and the only hand you would play is AA, and each time you had AA you would go all in preflop.

Even with this scenario - it's only a matter of time before you go bust, despite you having the best hand at the time, because thats the nature of poker. Everybody gets stacked from time to time, even the best players in the world.

So by playing your whole bankroll, you're just going to keep playing and playing and playing, until you go bust - and that's never fun.

I wouldn't play with 30x a buy in - especially if you're a casual player. I would aim for between 15-20 buy ins for a level before moving up and down if you want to play higher.

Thank you very much for your advice and i guess i gave off the wrong impression. only recently wit this $15 that my friend sent me have i played .10/.25, this is actually i've played these stakes and normally play the .02/.04 limit and .01/.02 NL tables, during all my freeroll cash runs. So during those periods i was attempting to practice the best possible BR managment i could think of. Only now with this recent money my friend sent me am i ignoring it MAJORLY i might add.

May i add a question... if calling a flat push reraise with KK on a 7 high flop a -EV play? lol
anyways I think my biggest problem on via cash i like to see alot of flops with suited connectors (1 gapper worse) usually against the looser players at the table and out of position. That i am attempting to change at least tho.

Re: BankRoll hurdles

wow thank you for all the advice. everyone. actually i am fairly happy i posted this now because it did help me vent alot of the stuff thats been bugging me. Anyways i went back on my word and ended up playing .10/.25 just now for $15 buyin left the table after this incredible session
  1. During current Hold'em session you were dealt 141 hands and saw flop:
    - 7 out of 25 times while in big blind (28%)
    - 6 out of 25 times while in small blind (24%)
    - 21 out of 91 times in other positions (23%)
    - a total of 34 out of 141 (24%)
    Pots won at showdown - 5 of 8 (62%)
Pots won without showdown - 22

Just a massive run during a 2 rounds hitting quads with 44 and getting paid off insanly and JJ 4 times in 12 hands.

Anyways i left the table with $51.50 and better yet $100 overall BR. gunna take a break tomarrow as i have a live game to play and set up for. I'm also going to be dropping down to .02/.05 and buying in for 100BB. now that i have way more breathing room i can play more to my tastes

Re: BankRoll hurdles

So you've ran it to ~$75 and gone broke five times? Were you playing higher limits once you got up to around $75 or did you really go broke playing the penny tables? From reading one of your latest posts it seems like this is the case...$75 is a whole lot of buy-ins to lose at a $2NL table. Especially five times over...

Congrats on getting up to $100. You really should be fine now playing the nickel BB game (you've got a solid 20 buy-ins). Good luck.
