TiLt AdViCe...

Hey all. I'm wondering what you peeps do when you go on tilt. Specifically, what you do to get out of tilt etc. My tilts are really sick and usually begin with taking a sick beat or getting caught on a big and often not so smart bluff. After this it's off to the races: high stakes heads up, out-of-my comfort zone cash games, you name it. When I'm tilting I'm in a ugly spot. Now I know sucking out can feel great but if any of you have a personal strategy for dealing with tilt post it here. And yes, I know "quit playing" isn't a bad idea, just waaaay to bull headed to pull that one off.

Re: TiLt AdViCe...

Not sure if you listen to Poker Road Radio or not, but Bart Hanson's show "Cash Plays" had a great guest on a couple weeks ago specifically talking about psychology. He talked a bit about tilt and how to deal with it.

Interesting stuff. Short answer is stop playing... but only for a few minutes and get all introspective and think about how you feel... physically. Why are you tilting and what set you off.

I don't find myself going onto big time tilt, but there are times where I get really frustrated with how things are going and how the play around me is going as well (a lot of that I'm sure had to deal with me). I've found just a few minutes playing online (maybe an orbit) makes a difference.

I think of it as an orbit where I would have donked off a lot more by tilting and playing. I have yet to try this live, but I bet it will help there too!

Anyway, give it a listen. I found it interesting.

GL with it.

Re: TiLt AdViCe...

First I curse like a sailor. If more bad beats come soon after, I usually get up and walk it off for a minute or two. Then if I'm still feeling overly aggressive or the bad beats continue, I take the rest of the day off.

if you can't do that, then forget about controlling it...and forget about your bankroll too. there's no other advice to give. it's like asking for advice on drinking and driving. sometimes you get drunk. the only reasonable advice is to not drive home.

i'm certain that you see why.

once you realize this, then the next question is how to get up...get out of there...shut down p*, whatever. i recommend elements of poker, the poker mindset, zen and the art of poker, and yeah, that "cash plays" interview. the more you play and the more you study, the easier it should get to manage your emotional state.

Re: TiLt AdViCe...

If your playing online then i recommend skipping over to pokertube and watching something there for a while. Seeing someone else get burned by a 2 or 3 outter seems to help me. I also sometimes cash out almost all my bankroll back to neteller then use the bit i leave on site to tilt off on some super cheap games. Then i redeposit the next day once im fresh again.

I would say play some Blackjack/Roulette and try to win back all that you've lost?

Re: TiLt AdViCe...

I know how I feel as a player when I see a player go on tilt. I know it's "payday"! If I don't make $$$ off them, someone else will. So why would you think anyone else would look at you any differently?

Rule #1- Don't be somebody's "payday"
Walk away.
