Building bankroll in Pokerstars...

Hi All,

I decided to start playing online daily as of 1 week ago and started with $20.
I play mainly 0.10/0.25NL and sometimes 0.25/0.50NL. My bankroll is now over $250 and experiencing some success. Just wondering if anyone has started off the same way and has built a huge bankroll. Also, at what point should I consider moving up limits?? I figure if I can build it to $1000 I will play 0.50/1NL.

My goal is to build a huge bankroll and eventually play up to 5/10NL.

Please share any similar experiences and advice.

Cheers,

Jaeden

Re: Building bankroll in Pokerstars...

you're playing too big.

starting with $20 you had < 1 buy in for .1/.25. now you have 10 buyins (still pretty small), but you're also playing at .25/.50.

people disagree about how many buyins you should have to play ring games, but unless you're taking shots (which means understanding you could go busto) you should have at least 20.

careful, or you may find it all over in no time

Congrates on your success so far
I'm down like 60bucks from my initial buy-in. Bad run + bad play...= Diablo's buyin going away.

Re: Building bankroll in Pokerstars...

So what you are saying Jojo is that I should have at least $500 to play in the $0.10/0.25NL games???

Would you consider low-limit multiple table tourneys???

Re: Building bankroll in Pokerstars...

I started playing cash games during spring, got $50 free in a poker site and played NL5 until I had about 10 buy-ins and then moved up and down from NL10 - when having so few buy-ins I had to switch down quickly if I lost some so that I wouldn't go broke as I didn't want to deposit anything. Having a small bankroll was extremely annoying for me, and I decided that I want to have a much larger bankroll so that a loss of a buy-in wouldn't bother me so much. I.e. I need it to play well.

I think how many buy-ins you need depends mostly on your risk-tolerance, i.e. if you loose your poker money will you be okay with depositing more? Also I suspect it would be hard for most people to even know if they are winning players if they keep depositing more and occasionally withdrawing something. Finally I think its okay to play ten or twenty thousand of hands of every level, if you enjoy some success and maybe clear some bonuses you should have about 20 buy-ins for the next level which offers a nice cushion for bad beats

So yeah, I was almost at $500 before I moved up to NL25. Currently at about $800 and I haven't yet tried NL50. I suppose I could take a shot, but I'd like to get more experience from NL25 before I move up.

If you haven't done so already, check out PSO offers for poker sites, you can quite easily clear a $120 bonus + get a part of the sites deposit bonus while playing NL25.

Re: Building bankroll in Pokerstars...

This may be a silly question but how do I figure out how many buy-in I have based on the game I play??

lol, well you can buy in for whatever you want, obviously. but i counted max buyins. .1/25=$25 buyin.

and yeah, $500 is 20 buyins, then. this is a little bit conservative, i guess, and assumes that if you lose for awhile you'd prefer to not go broke. so with some losses you could move down and try to build back up.

MTT's are quite a bit more volatile than ring games, b/c you don't rate to make big cashes very often and rate to finish out of the money quite a bit. so to be conservative there 20 wouldn't cut it.

Re: Building bankroll in Pokerstars...

I agree with Jojo, you should have at least 20 buy-ins before you move up a level and that could even be a little light. If you want to play 0.5/1, there’s nothing stopping you from doing so right now. You may catch a heater and build your bankroll real quick. However, your bankroll can and will go the other way just as fast. You have to have the discipline to move back down a level if you lose too much. That is not easy to do for most players.

I’m currently trying to climb back from a downswing of $550 that happened over 2 weeks playing 0.25/0.50. That’s 11 buy-ins for that level and I was only buying in for $30 (yes, I’m semi-short stacker, but not a ratholer), therefore, I lost 18-$30 buy-ins. It was quite comical after awhile the way I was losing. There was nothing I could do right. The downswings happen and when they come, it’s brutal. You will wonder if you even know how to play. The downswing didn’t bother me much because I was adequately bankrolled for that level.

I’m currently over bankrolled for 0.25/0.50. I started playing 0.05/0.10 at Bodog with $125 about 14 months ago. I grinded at that level until my bankroll was about $2400. I took a few shots at 0.10/.25 and then skipped that level and went to 0.25/0.50 (looser game/level) this past October. My current bankroll is about $3650, after being up to $3960. I had the big downswing I mentioned earlier and I’m working my way back up. The downswing didn’t bother me because I had an adequate bankroll. I may be cautious with my bankroll, but I’m not afraid to shove all-in whenever I’m playing.

One other point, I 3 table (max. allowed by Bodog), so I have more of my bankroll in play during a session. I’m not sure what the recommendations are if you multi-table. I would think the 20 buy-ins should go up. Good luck, don’t rush it.

Re: Building bankroll in Pokerstars...

My general take on bankrolls:

1. The size of your bankroll to a certain extent depends on your style and such. If you play the lag role, you'll probably face higher variance and probably need a deeper bankroll to weather them. For tigher play, a smaller bankroll may work fine.

2. Average bankroll recommendations like 20-25 buyins are usually good for most players. As stated, depends on your risk aversion to having to reload your account.

3. Set some thresholds like min. bankroll (15 buyins) where you will drop down a level and something like a max bankroll where you will look to jump up a level (30-50 buyins). If you multi-table, you can mix in more of the next level once you get over your max threshold. For example, when I have 15-30 buyins, I play my normal level. When I get over 30 buyins, I'll mix in 1 table of the next level for every 3 of my normal levels or something like that.
