I have never understood the attraction of "play money" online poker.
It's limited. I actually did play money on Empire for a week when I decided I wanted to play online just to get used to the interface. Then I cashed in a freeroll and went from there.

That is about the only good reason for the play money account, to get use to the interface.

Well currently I'd like to learn to play 7 Stud, but wouldn't want to loose a lot of money by learning the basics so I might try some play money tables. The smallest real-money tables seem to be .25/.50 on my site. I'd prefer to find some software for it though, since I doubt the play is any good at these tables. Perhaps I should try harder to find some sites with smaller real money games. Its fun to profit while learning, even though it would be very little money.
Thanks for the great feedback. It sounds like what was too good to be true probably is. I'll look for SNGs or some freerolls after I prove myself a bit more with play money. In this case ignorance is bliss - I'm having a blast with the play money at the moment.
For what it's worth, I found that the higher stakes play money games weed out a lot of the silly crap found with the lower stakes. It may not resemble a real money game, but it is still poker. Well...kind of...sorta...maybe.
Play money isn't even close to real money. I've even been amazed at how tight some .01/.02 NL tables can be, considering the stakes. The play money ring games are simply atrocious.
I would suggest playing a few play-money sit-n-go tournies. Ignore the play of the first 4 to 5 players that go out. When you get down to the last 3 or 4, that is similar to the regiular play on the $5+.50 sit-n-gos. If you can make the top 3 regularly with play money, you should be able to move over to the micro-stakes and make it profitable.
I would agree with Colquhoun in playing the SNG's. Though you'll need to play the higher level SNG's. In P*'s the 80K SNG would be close to a $1.20 SNG.
The play money ring games are more or less joke but I guess you get to play some flops, which is a good thing right?

I'm tempted to transfer Mr. Spiff $5 to get him started on the death spiral of a real money online poker playing degen.
Mr. Spiff to Mrs. Spiff: 'But honey, its not my money, some guy gave it to me. Honestly, I didn't deposit any money on the site. Don't take online poker away from me, please!'
As funny as the post is...there is a fair bit of truth to it! Which is why I was laughing so hard. Seriously, thanks for the sentiment of sending me the $5. I'll sit tight and play with the funny money and let the dust settle with my wife.
Explanation: I'm in the middle of building a poker table, and I'm less than two weeks away from buying a new set of chips.
Of course, I thought about biting the bullet and making that deposit for online poker. But THAT would be the real gamble! D'oh!
