Re: What do you do when you lose 95% of your bankroll on one hand?

I haven't read the replies.

You are misunderstanding the term, "bankroll". A bankroll is what you use in order to not go broke. You "play within your bankroll" so that when these one-in-a million hands come along you don't go BUSTO.

What you did here is put all your money on the table and take a shot.

No offense man, that's just how it is. I've put all my money on the table too. I've rarely had it work out in my favor. I'm going to try to stop doing it.

Re: What do you do when you lose 95% of your bankroll on one hand?

I'm too dumb to figure out multi-quote.

So yeah, you basically have realized you were taking a shot. If you're not willing to play all the money on the table on ONE HAND, don't bring it. If you're not willing to go broke RIGHT NOW, don't bring it. If you want to grind and grind and grind take your $400 to the .1/.2 game.

Personally, I'm going to take my bit of $400 to the .2/.5 game but I'm crazy like that...

'cause it's fun money. FUN MONEY. (That caps was more for me than you

I don't gamble for a living. I don't even gamble for profit anymore since I went BUSTO. I gamble for the challenge. I want to beat everyone and I'm willing to put my $33.40 up! (Toldya I was busto) I don't really care about this much money (since I'm not homeless and stuff) so there's a certain disconnect between me and the losses.

Once you want to A) Have poker support you in the manner to which you've become accustomed or 2) realize you should make poker a financially independent venture, from which you only withdraw, never deposit.... then, THEN you must worry about bankroll management.

Right up until that point it's just fun money. You can blow it on one hand or you can blow it on strippers and booze. Just don't take it so seriously that it depresses you.

Save that for when you're SERIOUS about poker. Some may never want to be SERIOUS. I'm not sure if I'm one of those anymore.

Re: What do you do when you lose 95% of your bankroll on one hand?

As others have posted, you are playing way above your bankroll.

Also, with that hand, you should have on been a badbeat jackpot table......

Re: What do you do when you lose 95% of your bankroll on one hand?

I didn't read the bad beat/cooler, and I'm sure it's been said, but I wouldn't sit with 95% of my bankroll. I sit with about 5% of my roll.

Re: What do you do when you lose 95% of your bankroll on one hand?

Yeah, I knew that going in with my entire roll was a mistake, but I guess I had to learn the hard way that if I don't want to lose it all don't put it all on the table. I'm taking a week off, re-reading some cash game material, and picking up some new stuff, and then I'm going to go back and work my $17 bankroll back up. If I can effeciently take that $17 back up to $400 in a reasonable amount of time, then I'll know I must be doing something right with poker.

Time to go read Chris Ferguson's stuff on Bankroll management, I've skimmed it before and he really puts it into a good mathematical perspective.

Thanks for helping me realize just how much of a blunder risking my entire BR was, guys

Re: What do you do when you lose 95% of your bankroll on one hand?

It's ok from time to time to take a shot at higher stakes than you should be playing but using your entire bankroll in one game is a huge mistake. Now just learn from it and apply this lesson to your next bankroll. If you do a search using "bankroll management for poker" you will find several great site that will give you a lot of information and guidelines to follow. Having money set aside only for poker and enough to stand the swings that are inevitable are necessary to keep you able to continue playing with the best possible chance of doing well over the long run. Here is one good link .

Re: What do you do when you lose 95% of your bankroll on one hand?

I feel for ya, man. Same happened to me. Worst streak ever. I keep losing hands to rivered flushes, straights, and even full houses. These hands are supposed to hit 20% or less of the time but I'd estimate I've lost to these draws about 75% of the time in the last couple of weeks. My $800 is now at $60. The plan?

Set some money aside and have it ready to deposit for the next promotion.

Re: What do you do when you lose 95% of your bankroll on one hand?

I will never understand playing online poker for big money? To me it falls under the slot machine category. Anything that is controlled by computer or electronics is not good. I only play live in a casino or home game. Thats just me. If you had this hand and outcome at a casino you would have been paid off. Either by winning the hand or the BB jackpot. Good luck to building back up.
