Chips: 101 | | | Online gaming OK in US next year???? Newsweek report: The Fight Over Online Casinos - Newsweek: International Editions - MSNBC.com
They could get a sign as early as this week. Sept. 22 is the first WTO deadline for America to cut a deal with Antigua and the other nations. But one WTO insider predicts that the only announcement on that day will be that the deadline has been extended. "This won't happen fast; America is going to dig its heels in," says Sallie James, trade-policy analyst at Washington's Cato Institute. "But if I had to bet, I would say that by this time next year America will have changed its laws." And in this case, that means all bets will be on. |

My guess is the US Government will appeal, but eventually pay the billions in fines to the EU, Antigua, and everybody else, thus continuing the online poker embargo against its own citizens. Then the status quo will remain until congress does something about it, which wouldn't happen before the '08 election. There is no justification for paying the fines and keeping Americans away from online poker, but this very disappointing administration does what it wants when it wants so this little blip will not be a $15,000,000,000+ exception.
The longer congress waits to do anything, though, the more creative the online poker business will get. American players and online poker rooms will slowly wade back into the water as long as Congress doesn't do anything. I'd say that if congress does nothing for another couple years, then the net result of recent legislation will be fairly negligible. I doubt publicly traded companies will allow transactions with Americans by that time, but the existing poker rooms that allow Americans, plus some new ones, will still be there, and getting money to them will be easy as pie (not that it's very hard now, but it will get even easier).
That's my guess. I'd like to be wrong. I loved those soft PartyPoker tables, and having 100s of sites to bonuswhore was equally fun. |

Chips: 506 | | | Re: Online gaming OK in US next year???? I just checked compatiblepoker. Here is the latest: The FT reported on the latest compensations for online gambling for those countries affected by the UIGEA and their rights with the WTO. Here are the cliff notes to the article. - Talks between the US and the EU will continue until October 22 over just compensation.
- The US proposed opening up technical testing sectors and warehouse/storage services to "make up" for other countries losses in the online gaming sector.
- The EU will discuss this proposal next week although many believe it should be rejected because it doesn't nearly equate to the $4 billion the EU is said to be losing.
- The US only wants to offer $500,000 to Antigua instead of the $3.4billion. Antigua says they will ignore US patents if not properly compensated.
So basically the USA is doing everything it can except to make online poker a freedom for its citizens.
My favorite part is Antigua. That $500K offer is ridiculous, and just imagine what happens if Antigua starts ignoring patents, copyrights, and trademarks... |

What's the big deal about $15 billion. Just add it to the 9 trillion we owe and forget about it. |

I always thought poker was basically an American thing that has spread around the world. Seems silly that they deny their corporations the money that could easily been theirs. I remember the same thing happening when US banned the use of strong encryption on software, it prevented successfully US companies from operating efficiently while it allowed companies from other countries to take the markets. |

YEAH!! | I would if the line up at the border doesn't take so long. I went across the border to Seattle to board cruise ship Saturday and it took 3 hours drive plus 3 hours wait at border. |

Kyle from AZ has been pushing for a ban on online gaming for years now. Its as evil as gay marriage you know! Just ask Senator "Happy Feet" Craig.
