If it was a scheduled down time, didn't they pop up the updates counting down the time? They have in the past.

It wasn't scheduled. I guess they had a server issue or something. They were popping up messages saying "play will resume shortly". Then they just said "server going down, we apologize."

I was the chip leader in a tournament, so I was a tad pissed. But I was compensated well, so I'm not so upset any more.
