Critique my loss

Please help me with my thought process. I think I played this alright, other than maybe shouldn't have been there in the first place. Is this an inevitable result, or does his betting sequence tell you something else?

Well, idiot end of a straight... Don't know what else to say. Happens all the time.

Just want you to know I'm not calling you an idiot. It happens though, just unlucky. Too bad he limped with AJ too...

Re: Critique my loss

I'd limp with J,9 suited no problem, I've caught 2 or 3 straight flushes with that hand. Not knowing how people played previous it's hard to say. If this guy limped with decent cards before, you have no idea what he has, could be against two pair, I doubt a set since it should have been raised PF. I guess AJ or the flush draw is there, especialy an AX flush draw that has a bunch of outs. I imagine he put you on the flush draw that's why the all-in on the turn. Need more info on the guy to make a determination. You could have several hands that kill you on the river, especially if the flush hits. So you cold have easily lost to 2,3 of diamonds.

Re: Critique my loss

this is what is commonly referred to as a cooler. Not too much to critique. You had the second nuts and got it all-in. that's usually a pretty good plan.

My spidey-sense is telling me this is more of a bad-beat/cooler thread then an attempt to learn strategy.

In the future post up your hands one step at a time and let people respond to your actions so they don't make results oriented comments. For example show the preflop action and your hand as ask "what would you do here?" After you get a few responses show the flop and the action up to you and ask it again. After you get some responses about that then you can reveal that somone shoved all-in against you and you can ask whether or not you should call. this way people focus on the actual hand and decision points in it, instead of focusing on the end and the results.

Pick more difficult hands, reveal them in pieces so as to avoid results-oriented responses and you'll probably get better advice.

Re: Critique my loss

I go broke 7 out of 10 times here.

The chances are low that he has a AJ here. And unless you know this guy as a nut farmer I don't see how you get away.

Actually no. I really want to know whether I played this hand correctly or not. My intention was not to have it look like a bad beat.

Noted, will do that next time.

That was one thing I didn't think of. Thanks.

My third hand at the table, so you have as much info about this guy as I do, barring pokertracker.

Re: Critique my loss

Limping with J9h was fine; why not? No one did anything to suggest you *shouldn't* be in the pot. AJs is not the greatest hand and that player may have been varying his play anyway. But there is definitely no reason not to see the flop.

So then you have the second best straight. You raise was good, it pushed out the blinds. However, then you see a 1.5x raise to your bet and one that is almost a pot sized bet.

You have $40 left. You either lay this down or push, I think. A call means you are hoping for an ace or hoping you are ahead. But if an ace doesn't come are you going to walk away with $27 or push *that*?

But it's just semantics to some extent since I don't see how you can lay down the second best straight. Bad luck is what it looks like to me. If the other guy had raised more on the flop, maybe you could've gotten away...

Good comment. That type of forward thought process is what I need to work on.
Thanks for pointing that out.
