Hit a Set 3x's and still lose a SNG

Here are the following hands of a poor soul (cantana ) who hit a set 3x's in a $6+.50 Turbo SNG and got knocked out early. On a couple of his hands he could have let them go but either way, tough to lose when you hit a set 3 x's. First time I saw that in a SNG.

Re: Hit a Set 3x's and still lose a SNG

I'm also a bit lost playing sets on draw heavy boards. Especially on hands like this where just one card is needed for the straight:

*** FLOP *** [Th 7s 8c]
Eple87: bets 120
cantana: calls 120
*** TURN *** [Th 7s 8c] [Js]
Eple87: checks
cantana: bets 80
Eple87: raises 200 to 280
cantana: calls 200

Re: Hit a Set 3x's and still lose a SNG

I remember hitting a set once, vaguely.

Flopping THREE sets, in addition to turning another in the same tournament, WOW!

The problem with this hand is that cantana needs to use a better betting strategy. The flop bet was good - but they were called and then the check on a very scary board. Bet 80? WHY. If they are going to bet the turn, it needs to show strength, not weakness. Betting 80 gives anyone with a real hand the opportunity to punish you, plus those real aggressive players may see this as a real weak move and try to push you off of the hand. If you bet - bet like 200. If they raise, you know you are beat. If they call, you can re-evaluate based on the river.

Better move - check behind. You do not want to get too involved with this hand after the river, plus you have position. A check from a decent player in this situation does not mean weakness, in fact - many would do this to entice a bluff on the river if the turn made their hand. This keeps the pot size more manageable. The only way that you want to commit significant chips is if the board pairs, and you will not see that until the river. Cantana has position, but is not using it.

Re: Hit a Set 3x's and still lose a SNG

Good points w16227. I re-read the hand histories before I posted that part, trying to figure out where he should have shown strength but I didn't really know. The minbet on the turn is awkward. You are right that a check would have been better. Although I do hate to give free cards.
