Chips: 3,054 | | | My first real-money online straight-flush I've had a couple of B&M straight-flushes in my day, but just started playing online for real money a couple weekends ago. This is my first online straight-flush (presumably the first of many), and it was a little bit strange... much lower cards than any hand I'd played all night, but figured I had odds to call from the SB. It worked out well for me (got paid off reasonably well), but I'm interested in hearing how I "should" have played the hand. What would you have done differently?

I never had a straight flush Played about 300 online SnG's, have had maybe 3 quads, two open ended straight flushes (which were folded to me) and a few gutshots which I didn't chase. Once I would have got one but folded before the flop (had something like 36o).
Interesting hand though. Too bad he didn't have the ace. |

Chips: 3,054 | | | Re: My first real-money online straight-flush The funny thing about this hand is I didn't see it coming; never noticed I had a shot at a straight-flush until it hit. And I honestly had no idea what he had at various points during this hand. If I thought he had a K-high straight, I might've check-raised or pushed on the river. He insta-called my bet on the river, by the way. I doubt he even saw how much I bet until I was awarded the pot.
Basically, here were my thoughts:
Preflop: I'd been getting garbage hands from the SB all night, and dumped most of them. Here, I noticed the BB hadn't raised preflop since he sat down, so assuming he checks, I'm getting nearly 7:1 from the pot, so I can pretty nearly call with any two cards... and "they're suited". And they'll be easy to throw away if the flop doesn't hit me hard (vs. something like QT, where if the flop hits you, you probably still have a 2nd-best hand and are likely to lose a lot of chips).
Post-flop:
The flop is ridiculously low, and probably missed everybody. I hit bottom-pair and have an inside straight draw, and figured I'd semi-bluff with my usual continuation-sized bet. I've been throwing out continuation bets all night; most have been winning the pot right there, and with such a small (limped) pot and such a bad flop, chances are I'll take down the pot right here with a ~half-pot-sized bet. And if I get a caller, he probably has two overcards (like AT or AJ) and I'm ahead anyway.
Post-turn:
LOL, I hit the straight! Okay, now I've got to try to get money out of this hand. I've got the 2nd-nuts (86 is beating me), but I'm probably good; he might've raised with the open-ended straight draw (but maybe not). Also, there's a flush draw (that I'm on), but I don't want it to hit, because I'd go from 2nd-nuts to not-even-close-to-nuts with a baby flush. But I doubt he's on the flush draw anyway, since he would've called my post-flop bet with only a 3-flush. Hmmm... what does he have? Well, just in case, I should bet enough to take away his (*pot*) odds to call with a flush draw. A little more than half the pot should convince him that my post-flop bet wasn't a complete bluff, and it'll be a mistake if he calls.
* - I'd love to here some discussion about his implied odds here.
Turn:
Dang, the flush hit! ... ... Wait a minute?! OMG!!!
Now what do I do? For all I know, he's just got 2 over cards, and he'll fold to any bet. If I thought he had a decent flush, I might check here, he'd put in a reasonable bet, I'd check-raise, he'd push all-in, and I'd get all his chips... but I doubt he's even got a flush, so he's probably as afraid of me having it as I would be of him. I'll cry if he checks behind me, so I have to bet. I think it's my most +EV play here. The question is, how much? If I bet too much, he'll know I hit the flush; too little will look suspicious, too. Hmmm... how big would look like a bluff? Maybe just a little less than the pot? |

Originally Posted by jdunford * - I'd love to here some discussion about his implied odds here. | Oh, and I should probably mention that my opponent didn't make a mistake calling my turn bet afterall, since he had top-pair-secondbest-kicker right from the flop, along with the flush draw. He had good reason to think he might be ahead already, plus have outs at a monster hand (which hit).
So I went from VERY far behind pre-flop (didn't even have the "suited" thing in my favour), to way behind on the flop, to way ahead on the turn, to what would've been disastrous with any other club, but gave me the absolute nuts on the river. |

Any other club on the river and I'm checking and folding to a pot-sized-or-larger bet. Probably would've called a bet less than pot-sized in the hopes that my straight was still good.
The hand could've gone in many different directions depending on table position, who opens the betting, etc.
I'm sure he felt that it was a horrible beat... but he could've avoided it and taken down the pot if he'd raised my post-flop bet. He let me draw the straight for free when he was ahead. In fact, it's a good thing (for me) that I bet the flop, as I'm sure he would've opened the betting with his top-pair-K-kicker, and I would've folded if I didn't have the odds to chase the straight and trips (6 outs; maybe a couple more for 2-pair possibilites). |

straight still goot.
I would have puckered on the low flush
