the 5s would have held.

Re: Set v Set

Laying down a middle or bottom flopped set is the most difficult play in NL (IMHO). Usually, in a set vs. set situation - someone is going broke.

Re: Set v Set

I folded two sets last week:

middle set (9s) with board reading 3 9 J J J and 4 players in the pot (technically, I had a full-house, I know)

I also folded a set of Ks when the board had 4 spades showing (I didn't have one).

Granted, this is at my father's extremely loose game, so things are different...

Till now, I don't know that I ever put my opponent on a set like this.
Bottom set, or weak trips with no kicker on a flushed board or an obvious straight against other made hands. By the action of the hand, it was apparent I was beat. And in the few cases I remember, I was in fact beat.

Easy to get away from, because you don't stick yourself in the hand by chasing it much past the flop if you don't spike it, or can limp to the turn with the correct value.

Just about any set on the flop, without a clearly coordinated flop, I'm going to get a lot of checks in.

But yes, if I'm beat, I'll get away from it, but it's such a rare hand to be beat with (in Hold'em). Like I said earlier, I think I can remember 2 times this happened.

Actually, 3 now that I think about it. But the first time was one of my biggest blunders in the game. I had a set of 3's which I got away from that would have in fact taken the pot down. Totally misplayed it, stuck myself in the hand, then folded on the river with 2 all ins in front of me (both of which I had covered), which resulted in an absolute MONSTER pot in a 5/5 NL game.

Therein lies the problem, it doesn't happen often and when it does happen how often do you put your opponent on one such that you'd even consider folding. I've lost to over sets before but I've never put my opponent on one before so folding was never considered. The only reason I even suspected him of a set and not 2 pair or an overpair was the fact that he played it exactly like I would have played it in his position with any set; still don't know if I could fold one short of my opponent flashing his cards or an active multiway pot with bottom set. Also, I probably couldn't fold it because I'd hate wondering what he had if he didn't show or hate myself if he showed and it was Q5o for 2 pair.

BTW, good for you on being able to fold a set. Definitely a tough play like folding KK preflop for us amateurs.

Re: Set v Set

Dude, don't fold KK preflop.

Just don't.

Don't get me wrong, I've correctly folded sets. The only one I folded incorrectly that I can think of (and have been shown) is the one I described earlier.

Sets are gold, push them hard. If it's four flush or your set evaporated because the pair on the board tripped... then yeah, probably time to go away.
