Badly Played?

This is not how I typically play AK but his pre-flop bet and flop check just got my poker senses all tingly. Looking back, I can only guess he knew I held AK (yea its rigged), was planning on C/R the flop with TP2K if I bet out or I have such a fearsome table image that he couldn't force himself to make a real bet till he had 2pr and I showed absolutely no strength. BTW, notice the guy sitting with $327 at the $50NL table.

Re: Badly Played?

Minor addition.

Player is VP 51 and PFR 11 over just 27 hands. He was up ($65 or so) when I joined the table and won a big hand against someone else when he turned a gutshot wheel with A4s.

Re: Badly Played?

You should use a hand history converter to make your posts easier to read - I use this one:
http://www.neildewhurst.com/hand-converter

Anyways, both of you played your hand really weird. His pre-flop raise was too small for AQ and I can only guess that he wanted to check-raise the flop.

His bet on the turn doesn't really do anything for me - way too small... I'm pretty sure he had no idea you were on AK at that point. In his position I'd figure you for a small pair or a draw.

I don't know what to say about this hand - very confusing and the Q on the river was just tough luck.

Re: Badly Played?

I'm about 50/50 on reraising with AK preflop and in position and I thought about it but something said don't do it this time. With the flop, his check also felt really strange so I checked again. By the turn, I was in total calling station mode which is something I rarely do. In hindsight, I feel lucky to have only lost $9.50 on the hand as it could have easily been much more by the river.

After this hand, he left the table and I did a few hands later; maybe we were both weirded out on this hand.

Re: Badly Played?

You should have re-raised A-K with position to see whre you are at.. Bet the flop raised the turn, why you would check A-K when the ace hit is beyond me .. slow play on the button :P...and you could have just called on the river if you fear a set....

Re: Badly Played?

yeah my NL cash skills may be a little rusty but if you don't bet that flop what is the point of playing AK? Obviously if he checkraises you big time you have to reevaluate, but it sounds like you had a decent read on him and could tell if you are ahead.

You said you became a calling station on the turn I am sure you just wanted to keep the pot small and get to a showdown, but what hand do you put him on at that point? I guess most of the time you are either way ahead or way behind at that point so raising probably won't help you much, but I think the whole weird situation comes from not betting the flop.

BTW say you bet 2/3 of the pot on the flop ($2.50) and he checkraises to $10 ($7.50 raise making the pot $15.50 so you are getting about 2-1 odds) what do you do? Fold...move-in...call?

I agree with everything you say and normally I would do that. For some reason, when he raised PF and then checked the flop I got bad vibes/goosebumps/chills/spooked/etc; no other explanation. Maybe that's what I get for playing at 1am. In hindsight it worked out as I don't know that I could have pushed him off AQ. Maybe the poker gods were looking out for me.

His check on the flop with TP2K is weird, I'd guess he wanted to C/R with this hand which is an odd hand to C/R with. On the turn, I want a cheap showdown and maybe he puts me on A7/A9 or something. The odd thing here is also the river, why pot it?

That's a toughie, my gut would be to fold with the small raise PF (wants action?), the check on the flop (no cbet though could have under pair?) and then the C/R (AA?set of 7s?). Likely fold or more likely reraise his C/R, defintely not an all-in or call. He calls or pushes, I know where I'm at now.

Re: Badly Played?

If you reraise what amount are you raising...15? not trying to grill you hear just interested in the thought process behind the hand. I think a checkraise in this situation from a bigger stack is one of the hardest situations in NL when you have TPTK.
