For the tournament n00bs

Sometimes you do stuff like this:

Saw Flop | Saw Turn | Saw River | Saw Showdown | Won

PokerStars Game #6396583579: Tournament #32455150, $4.00+$0.40 Hold'em No Limit - Level VIII (200/400) - 2006/09/23 - 22:25:26 (ET)
Table '32455150 7' 9-max Seat #2 is the button

MP3 - t1740
Button - t3205
SB - t29262
HERO - t6110
UTG - t6265
UTG+1 - t18775
MP1 - t4620
MP2 - t1885

PREFLOP Level VIII (200/400)
HERO is BB with T 7
4 folds, MP3 raises t1315 to t1715, 2 folds, HERO calls t1315.

FLOP t3830 (2 players)
3 6 6

TURN t3830 (2 players)
3 6 6 7

RIVER t3830 (2 players)
3 6 6 7 4

SHOW DOWN
HERO shows T 7
MP3 shows K Q
HERO collected t3830 from pot

Final Pot: t3830

This is just before second break in a $4.40. 18 pay, 29 left.

Since he's going to be pushing with any paint, I'm definitely 2:1 behind his range, no more. My *ONLY * decision is whether the difference in having over 7k chips compared to having just 4.5k chips is worth it to me. In this case I decided to gamb00l, because:

1) There is very little difference to having 5.5k and 4.5k at this point.
2) There is a very LARGE difference between having 5.5k and 7.25k at this point.

To illustrate, I went on a mini-tear after this, mostly due to table image. I'm now sitting 3/23 ten minutes after said break. I got some cards and got paid BECAUSE I made that "loose call".

Stew on it for awhile and you'll probably come to the conclusion that I made a high-variance but good play. Yes, I was behind but given his range and the stage of the tournament I'll make these calls AT LEAST 50% of the time in this situation. It's possible that's even too tight.

Discuss?

edit: hey mods... the converter still chokes on antes. I don't know much but if you allow me I'll try to fixor it.

Re: For the tournament n00bs

Easy call for me

- The blinds are so big that this is very close to a pot-odds call.
- With your stack you can afford to gamble a bit
- Raiser was in a very late position and could be going all-in with just about anything since his M is getting close to 2
- Very likely that both your cards are live

Re: For the tournament n00bs

so is this call 100% for you? I'm wondering if I'm too tight in these situations.

Should I *EVER* give this up with a ten?

Re: For the tournament n00bs

Not 100% call for me - it depends on my read of that player. If he folded the last 20 hands I'd fold, but if he's reasonably loose I'd call.

Re: For the tournament n00bs

Yeah, with your stack that's a fairly standard call for me.

Re: For the tournament n00bs

no real read on him, only like 20 hands and he was 20/20 or so... so yeah, call that shiz for me. He'd been pretty short the whole time I saw him and anyone who's playing that range that aggresively is pushing any paint, IMO. The blinds had gone up about 7 hands ago, he had gone through an increased blind.

I did stop and think about it though, it's not like I insta-called him.

Re: For the tournament n00bs

That's good. I still have to remind myself sometimes to pause 5-10 seconds and think.

At foxwoods the other day, my buddy reminded me of this as we were sitting at the same table. Donking up the 1/2, he raises to 12 in EP, and is re-raised to 25. He smooth calls and checks a T x x flop. He has 140 left, and re-raiser has ~700. Re-raiser goes all in, and my friend insta-calls. My friend had QQ and the reraise took all his chips with KK. When he insta-called, I figured he had AA or TT. He was planning to check raise any flop w/o an A or K, and didn't let an overbet of a re-raiser stand in his way. He did realize afterwards that he could of gotten away from the hand if he just stopped for a few seconds.

Not that this has anything to do with the tourney hand, but well, it was on my mind.

Re: For the tournament n00bs

To be fair to your friend I would probably have lost all my money in that spot too.

Re: For the tournament n00bs

Yeah, I like to think I can lose all my money w/QQ there too.
