Lol, I always want to turn off the chat, but I never do.

Just a few days ago I had a similar conversation after a guy expressed his anger at me for calling his $20 bet into a $220 pot with AK (in $10 SNG) when I raised big pre-flop and the flop came 3 8 9, and I caught my ace on the turn. I went back and forth with him for a few seconds just to tick him off, which I usually do not do.

I hear ya! I don't understand why people get so angry and insulting sometimes...for me it is all about the fun and I'm more confused than offended when I encounter these people...why play when it pisses you off so much?

I pretty much only use the chat option for our CT thursday tourneys because it seems to be the only SnG where the chat is jovial and good-natured...

Speaking of which...looking forward (as always) to the game tonight...

They attended the phil helmuth school of poker play and etiquette. They're not allowed to graduate until they've made a complete ass out of themselves in an online poker room.

Come on Jojo, when you steal their blinds and flash a 93o I am sure you are doing it for a reason; either to extract some colourful comments and get them off their game or something else to enhance your chances of a victory.....we all know you too well here, your brilliant poker mind is always churning away.

Yeah, you get meatheads a lot but you can also enjoy some friendly convo too so I will continue to chat away despite these examples.

Re: Why i try to avoid chatting while playing online

Had a similar situation at a no limit game where dude got PO'd when I had top pair with a suited ace.

I flopped two cards to the flush and top pair, 10s. I bet, he re-raises me about 2/3 my stack. So I consider awhile, then push. I rip another heart on the turn and it gives me the hand. My new best friend hits the roof.

He begins calling me fishy, and donor and all types of choice names. I keep sucking up to him, telling him how much better he is than me. I continiously ask him to teach me after he berates me. Then I ask why the pro is sitting .50/$1 NL and not a bigger limit.

Long story short, I play for about an hour and watch his starting stack go from $350 to $30.

I told someone else that I was leaving, and the villian says "you giong fishing?" To my reply. "May as well, I have all your bait."

flattery!

while i have been known to steal blinds, i NEVER show hands, with the single exception of the occasional hammer steal on thursday night.

here's why: i play tight, and it's my preference that my steals look like strong hands. i have no interest in getting more action in tournaments; i don't play in any tight enough that that's a problem. the whole tight thing, imo, is about not getting into tough situations early, doubling up with big hands, and then punishing the table later on with aggression (in position). if people knew how much i steal when the blinds get big, everyone would get all vrecksler on my and push every time i raise . guys like mega, w16227, and the like bluff more often, and don't mind occasionally getting played with. those of us that play less hands need to win a larger % of those we get involved with...

showing bluffs just encourages calls, and 90% of the time you don't want calls in tournaments. really, vreck, when you reraise with 44 (as we know you love to do), do you REALLY want to see a flop?

finally, here's the big difference between me and you (and the reason why it's funny that you replied) :
we're at opposite ends of the personality scale while playing. you're all friendly and chatty. that's not a bad thing, but very much not me. i hate everyone, am pissed off about not getting cards or getting sucked out on, et cetera. what works best for me is to shut up and not show it, b/c when i do, people just start looking to get me all worked up.

so i've found that for the most part, chat doesn't work well for me. i can't take it lightly enough for it to work.

thursday night can be an exception, b/c i know you guys and i count many of you as friends. in online pickup games, though, that's a very difrferent sitch.

Re: Why i try to avoid chatting while playing online

Has anything that anyone has ever said in the chatbox ever aided your play against them -- given off tells, etc? Yeah, me neither.

On-line, you can gain all the info you need from # hands played, frequency of raises, betting style and speed of play.

In these situations (when talk gets ugly and distracting) -- "chat off." You're not missing anything.
