@$$@##@^ O8

My love hate relationship with O8 continues.

For the 1st time I can remember, I got the motherload of starting hands

A A 2 3

I have had the unsuited variety - but never (that I can remember) the suited one. This is the "pocket rockets" of the O8 world. Of course, I use it to demonstrate the true frustration of Omaha hi/low.

This is very rare. I believe that DAD604 knows the exact odds, but it is something like 1 in 2000 that you get this hand.

Pot limit O8 w/rebuys on stars. Potted it preflop from late position. BB and initial limper call. Decent outcome as both have me outchipped. Why? Well a reraise would have indicated a strong holding that may have ocunterfeited one of my low draws. This was still in the first hour, and play was pretty wild (rebuy tourney). Leads me to believe that I have great low posibilities, and that at least one ace may still be in the deck.

Flop was 239, with 2 . Not the greatest flop, but probably would have counterfeited other potential low draws as well.

Initial limper bets out 300. Kind of low, but was enough for me to push all in. I still had strong draws adn wanted to really apply pressure to any junk low draw since I needed runner runner for low.

One fold - one call. He has A5xx. I am in decent shape. Odds are about 50/50 that a low will hit. The A and 5 would counterfeit him and I would be in geat shape. I had almost a lock high. He had 3 fours or some junk runner runner to beat me. So like 30-40% to scoop, with like 80% chance that I get half.

@#!$@#!$ 4 hits giving him a wheel. OK - so I still have redraws (like 15 outs for a flush, wheel, or FH ). So to complete the slam, stars drops the non heart 4 out there.

REBUY.

Made it to like 30th out of 170 or 180. BIG payout too with the rebuys (only 18 paid). Made some decent plays, but only was able to scoop one pot after that.

Just a quick lesson in how close hand values run in O8. Even though I had the best possible starting hand (and this one is rare), it was still just about a 50-50 favorite preflop vs the other 2 players. Something like me 50, the A5 was 30% and the other guy like 20% (estimating here as I never got to see the 3rd players cards).

Re: @$$@##@^ O8

Omaha Hi/Lo the game you love to hate. We play a lot of SHOE cash games and I have run a couple of SHOE tournaments - a couple of weekends ago was the last one. I have never seen that hand personally. I ran a series of tournaments in June and one was just Omaha Hi/Lo and friend had A3A3 double suited - it held up for him.

I was suprised when I saw some Omaha odds to find how little a hand is a favorite over another. Still I have really tightened up my Omaha play especially Hi/Lo - if I don't have an A 2, or good A3 I won't even see a flop - except a really good high hand ie: KKQJ or high and low JJA4 - along those lines.

The Omaha trap - play too many hands - was usually my problem.

Re: @$$@##@^ O8

Nice to see the O8 holy grail; sucks that it didn't even split the pot. I had AA23 3 times but never double suited in over 13k hands online. PLO8 can definitely be a love/hate relationship buts its the only game I play (95%+).

Here's a couple of interesting hands from the other day:

Surprised how far behind I was in the hand preflop just goes to show you how important a low is even with AA double suited. Don't think I've ever gone heads up with both of use having AA double suited. Flop gave me nut flush draw but villian caught runner runner for his own nut flush plus he had a low.

Nice big blind special but could have played it slightly better to squeeze a few more bucks out; first foray into the PL08 $400 tables.

Re: @$$@##@^ O8

That really sucks that you didn't even split with AA23 double suits. Preflop I think you had way more than 50% with those cards but can't remember anymore as I have only toy with O8 for the past 6 - 8 months.

Have to say that is one hand that I have never been dealt.

I did not run a sim - but I beleive that I was 50% vs both hands (there were three players to the flop). Vs the one hand I saw - I was probably like 60%-40% preflop. I am pretty sure that the O8 odds I have run in the past are for a full scoop. They do not reflect the fact that the aa23 takes the low most of the time.

Hachck - PLO8 really is NUTS. I usually stick to limit O8 - but this was a tournament that started at the right time - with the right buyin (10+ rebuys). I do not think that I could play this in a cash game.

I really wanted someone to push back preflop (MANY all ins preflop at this table) so I would not have to make the postflop decision for all my chips. No such luck.

Got close too, and only rebought once (because of that aa23 hand ). Had like 3 hands towards the end where there was a river split instead of me scooping. Would have carried me to the cash if I had scooped one or two of those.

My final hand was a complete disaster. Would have taken 1/2 of a large pot (I was shortstacked with A3xx and there were 3-4 players in the pot with me to start). Had the low locked until the river 3.

If only Bodog had any limit O8 games going.

Yeah, that game sucks. I'm still not even sure how you lost.

Re: @$$@##@^ O8

Wow - ran some odds.

preflop

ME: scoop 44%
hi 47#
lo 50%

A59Q: scoop 9%
hi 13%
lo 5%

I gave the third guy 9TK7 (and a club draw). A marginal, but playable hand for a larger stack. It also gave them a good reason to fold on the flop.
9KT7 scoop 18%
Hi 39%
No low

I was pretty close.

Digest that - I will be back with postflop

Re: @$$@##@^ O8

From what I've experienced in my few O8 sessions, I think the fact that the deck has only 12 cards left after a flop (with nine players) makes for the weirdest turns and rivers. If a lot of people fold, it can mean that most of the medium cards are gone, and so only high and low cards are left in that small stub.

Re: @$$@##@^ O8

Postflop

and I made a mistake. Flop of a59 is really a5j

33% scoop
83% high

I hate O8 odds. My winning % is the same as AA vs KK pre-flop. I would take those odds anyday but they are still not that good.

not this time anyway. The next 4 times I get dealt aa23 ds, watch out.

may take me a few years to get them
