Changing Play

Well with a recent run of bad luck playing in the Short Handed and other forms of fast paced online sit an go tournies, I have changed for a bit at least the type of hold'em that I am playing. I have gone to playing in the MTT's (Multiple Table Tournament), and have actually enjoyed it.

I had to change my style of play that goes with the fast paced as well to a slowed down more patient game. I have played in 2 MTT'S so far the first I placed 100th out of 600and something. The 2nd one I placed 50th out of 630 so I got my money back plus a dollar WOOO HOOO.

It may not be stellar performance but it required that I change my pace of play how I approach the game going from a table of 5 to no more that 8. I played three types of Sit an go's the 5 man short handed 16 man with two tables of 8 and a 35 man wich was 5 tables of 7. You really have to look at chip position table position and starting hands. A mid pair at short handed table is pretty good, table of ten ifffy IMHO.

I will be playing a in a few more of these while still mixing in my sit an go's.

You may also want to try changing your playing style at the SH tables. Many times, a bad run is not caused by the cards going south - as much as the playing strategy vs the field. I was simply crushing SH tables on pacific, but ran into somewhat of a bad spell. Once I looked over the hands and players- I realized that I was not adjusting my game as the tables got looser. I tend to play a VERY aggressive style shorthanded (yes - I will raise 72 suited given the right situation) and this was working against me when the table texture was loose passive. I was still pulling in the monster hand pots that would have won anyway (flushes, nut st8s, FH, etc) , but was getting schooled by the loose play at the table. Basically - I was loosing more on my marginal hands because there were many chasers.

Instead of trying to build the stack by taking down many smaller pots - I had to be more paitent and try to build a better pot the times I held the goods. Preflop raising when 4+ players are going to call anyway is right out unless you are holding a PREMIUM hand.

The moral is to recognize when you game needs to be adjusted. Sometimes it is not the cards - it is you.

Re: Changing Play

I agree and have begun to do that but sometmies at the shorthanded tables it is hard not to revert to the way of playing that put almost 200 dollars up in the matter of three hours of play. You are right that I do need to adjust to how the table is playing. I think going into the MTT has helped with that, forcing me to slow my pace down, and change what I was doing adjusting to the play at the table.

I was able to carry that to my last SH game and was able to win the table using it. Laying back and taking it easy when everyone acted as a calling station and going after when they tightened up and I found out it did pay off. I found that one player was calling no matter what it almost reminded of that beer commercial where the cowboy at the table screams blackjack, and has to be reminded that they are playing poker. It was great when he went out holding a pair of threes and could not understand why he didn't win.
