The frustrations of O8

What a #$!@ night.

I won my way into the WSOOP O8 event a while back - and have been taking it easy in preparation. Played a little the past week- buy mostly reread ray zee and capalletti's books.

I entered the stars $10 MTT last night for some warmup. This is one of my favorite tournaments - and I have done pretty well in them lately.

I am crusing about 2 hours in. Something like 120 or so left (down from 310) and I am in a decent position. I have an above average chipstack and I have been playing smart all night (how did THAT happen ).

I am in the BB - and get dealt AA23 - with one ace suited. For those who do not play O8 that often, AA23 double suited is the absolute BEST starting hand possible. My hand was one suit off - so a monster. I also had good position for this hand - as the BB can raise this without much fear of knocking anyone out (this is one of the hands you definately want to build a pot with).

5 players see the flop.

!@#$@#!$

TJ7 rainbow - only one of my suit.

I still lead the betting. Many times this can pick up the pot right away when a high "draw" flops (only one card 8 or lower), plus I needed to see where I was. Two players fold - one guy raises.

If I only had a one way hand - or poor draws, this would be an easy fold. Problem is - I have many strong draws going in both directions. In O8 - chasing runner runner draws is not recommended - except in cases like this. Turn brings the A completing the rainbow.

Good and bad. I now have the nut low draw as well as a set of aces. I check knowing full well that I am in for bet (I figured that the A completed the raisers st. Some good news - no bet and I get the river for free.

River Q.

!@#$!##@!$#@$

Guy shows JJQx. Dude hit a set on the flop - I was ahead on the river - and any card but a Q (or another J) would have scooped.

Like losing with AA to 72 os on the river when they hit the 2 outer.

The good thing was that this did not really tilt me. I still busted out somewhere near 80th - but it took some decent suckouts to do so (like one guy scooped a big pot when he rivered a st8 flush to beat my A high flush).

Hopefully Wednesday will go a but better. I will post updates on the breaks in case anyone wants to stop by and heckle me.

I'm sorry, but am I not following things here? The river Q doesn't make his hand any better, because he can either play JJ (for trip J's) or QJ (for two pair, Q's & J's). Your trip Aces still win. With no board pair, there's no full house or quads possible, and with a full rainbow, no flush either.

For him to win, the river must have been a King, giving him a straight. In that case, there are four of those, plus one more J--five outs to beat your set, so he had a 1-in-8 chance to win.

OOOOOOPPPPSSS

ops:

100% correct - the K hit giving him the 4 outer straight.

Was typing fast and had a brain glitch. Thanks for the kick in the right direction.

No wonder I lost the hand - I did not even know what was on the board.

That's not like you W. Usually you are on top on things. Maybe too much wine at dinner.

No, I just had brain freeze remembering the river. The guy had 5 cards ( 4 kings and the last jack) to win. Any other card and I scoop.

lol - I usually try and grab the actual hand history. Prevents the selective memory from kicking in.

Looks like the WSOOP O8 tournamnet is going to be cash heavy - they need 500 players to meet the guarantee and they only have ~350 right now.

Good if I cash.
