me and my dumb questions

i'm new. hi. rochester, ny. i think i googled poker chip forum to find this place. just recently took an interest in chips because obama offered to pay for 10% of my house, so i finally have a place to host a game. i'm kinda terrified because i know i have the collector/nerd gene and not enough money for a new vice. so i want to buy 2 sets and be done with it. for life. we'll see. i'd bet against it. just got the sample set.

so, i'm pretty sure i want customized chips. i'm thinking one cheap set with bad caricatures of the regulars at our game, probably with vinyl labels. cash game denominations, .25 thru $25. and another with tourney denoms, 25 through whatever. probably ceramics, since i want a pop culture theme with detailed images. pearl jam, fear and loathing, tv or movie characters, syracuse basketball, etc. anyone got any good examples of the pop culture idea? someone must have made a godfather or grateful dead set or something like that, right? are these hard to have made, because of copyrights? would a small order stand a better chance, since it would appear to be less likely used for resale?

generally not a fan of hotstamps, but if i do make a pearl jam set, is this image do-able? without the text, i mean. http://991.com/newgallery/Pearl-Jam-Alive-462049.jpg seems like it might be too busy or messy.

can you have the welcome to fabulous las vegas sign altered to say, like, welcome to fabulous noone's basement, or are there more copyright problems?

does anyone "rent" chips from casinos for their home games? i go to vegas 3-4x a year and was thinking, why not just bring home a rack of singles and 2 stacks of fives from whatever casino i'm at? do you run the risk of them becoming obsolete? how long of a window do they give you to return discontinued chips?

quarter and fifty cent chips are nowhere to be found in vegas anymore, correct?

if a friend is offering 2 racks of casino de isthmus paulsons for $1 a chip, should i do that just for resale? $25's, $100 and $500's, i think.

Yes, you will run into copyright issues. Most vendors wont touch it, but I've seen questionable lables posted here before. Someone else may know better than myself.

According to Regulation 12 of the Nevada Gaming Regulation, you have 120 days after the chips are discontinued. It's usually announced in the local paper, but it may be 120 days from the date the notice is filed with the gaming commission.

If they do exist, they are extremely scarce and heavily guarded.

Bad deal. You'd be lucky to get $.80 / chip out of those on the aftermarket. My guess is they'd probably go for around $.65

I LOVE that idea and I think the little dude would make a fantastic stamp! You'll have to lost the "Pearl Jam" name, but see if you can think of something else and pair it with a modified version of that logo... fantastic possibilities. There are many great designers here that can help.

Depends. Do they say "PAULSON CHIPS" in the mold? If so, dew's prices are correct. If they're all top hats and canes, they're worth substantially more. Ask your buddy for a picture, post here, and we'll confirm market value for you based on recent eBay and classified sales.

thanks dew, paz, josh and pug. i'll get on the friend to take pics of the isthmuses (isthmi?), but i'm positive they have the hat and cane, not the words paulson chips. and i'll keep you updated on the pearl jam idea, i'm sure i'll be back for advice once i narrow down the other images i want to use. of course, i'll have 100 new ideas to sort out by then. i already can't shake the idea of the godfather marionette logo holding up denominations (fredo lowest/vito highest). or the movie idea (do it by movie, actor or director?) in general. when i stick to one tv show or movie, i keep running into the 4th or 5th best character or image sucking and not being worthy of it's own chip. this could take a while. decisiveness isn't a strength of mine.
