Talking New Chips... New Member... New Brain?

Hello all...

Well here I was getting ready to order my first set of chips. I have been playing for 3 years or so now but havent ever bought my own set due to the fact that all of my home game pals have sets and well I just didnt ever find anything I really liked (glad I didnt now...)! Recently I got the bug to finally get my own, partly due to just wanting them but also beacuse I am setting up a series of home tourneys were we will end up sending an overall winner to the 2007 WSOP. Anyhoo, long story short here I was all ready to buy a set of ASM horseheads and I stumble upon this site! Ughhhh now I have a lot more to read and a lot more to think about! lol Seriuosly though I am glad I did.. really like what I see and read so far.. kind of feel a bit lost but hopefully I will find my way around and how all of this works! I see you do group buys... I better figure out how to that works fast looks like your setting up a paulson buy.. thats tempting! How does one get involved in that? Thats rhetorical I will figure it out.. I think! Anyway, just wanted to say hello... prob be asking some advice from some of you before I order now.. in fact I do have a few questions on custom chips maybe I can get some opinions!

let me give you what I was going to buy...
1000 ASM Horsehead chips no inlay.. no denomination on them at all..with the 312 edgespot (prefer the 3d14 but you cant get that with out some custom inlay label) so basically a plain base color and then edgespots.. I guess I like a really clean look! I was ordering 5 colors for the use in our home tourneys as they will represent values as follows (#) = qnty
grey 100 (400)
black 500 (300)
orange 1000 (150)
purple 5000 (100)
pink or maybe green not sure 10000 (50)

so my questions for feedback are...

Edge Spots -
1- do you all prefer single color or mixed color edgespots? (meaning each chip has a different edgespot color or the all have the same color edge spot)

2- Also do you like a constant edge spot pattern or more of a progression of the edgespots? (see the ASM H designs just bought by one of the members here in custom chip I think it was the dbl D chips they have progression of the edgespots)

I guess I have rambled enough.. any other insight or advice anyone can share before I buy my first set would be helpful and appreciated..

Wooly

Re: New Chips... New Member... New Brain?

The ultimate question is what do you prefer? These will be your chips.

I will say that you can't go wrong with ASMs as they will hold their value. For what your paying, though, you could get a set of custom ceramics made for just a few bucks more at Palm Imports (where I got mine).

I recommend browsing the "Custom Chip Mock-ups" and "Custom Chip Gallery" for inspiration... see what colours and styles you like. Also, to make sure you order the right number of each chip colour/denomination, I recommend using:

Re: New Chips... New Member... New Brain?

Welcome to the forum!

I moved to PCG b/c looked like you were looking for a genreal set rather than customs.

I like a spot progression and definitely using different spot colors.

Do you have a budget?

I might consider some of the sets out there (e.g. pharohs, samurais, key wests etc...) rather than getting blanks if you can't afford customs right now and prefer clay.

The t-mold blanks look cool which you can check out at holdempokerchips.com along with many others.

There are some group buys in the GB section going on right now even a WSOP tribute

Might be cool to get some WSOP ceramics chips (a number of sets & vendors) and use them for your WSOP entry tourneys and give them to the winner at the end... maybe a way to help fund the chips also.

Anyways, just soime random thoughts... lot of info here on ChipTalk so put your reading glasses on!

Re: New Chips... New Member... New Brain?

Thanks all for the responses so far... I have seen ceramics mentioned... I know nothing about these chips... guess I will have to look into them! I do have a budget of around $600 and the set up I was getting through ASM came in at budget! I do prefer blank style over chips with denominations on them or some random graphic that means nothng to me! lol What can anyone tell me abotu ceramics? never even touched one...

Well, the main advantage of ceramics is you can put any graphic on them (from full-colour pictures to replicas of WSOP chips to whatever design you can think of). Most ceramics I've seen have denoms and tend to be very busy (just because they can be, I guess). Since you like a relatively plain look (no denoms, not a busy look), you probably don't want ceramics... but you should get a sample set from somewhere just to be sure.

I don't think I've ever seen a ceramic without denoms, so if you went that route, you'd probably have to design your own. That way, you get exactly what you want... but it takes a lot of time and effort...

They're also very hard and durable compared to compression molded chips... but I don't know if you'd consider that a benefit or not.

Re: New Chips... New Member... New Brain?

I will order a set of samples just to see what they feel like.. sound like.. etc! But in the mean time... can someone give me a little insight as to what they feel like, sound like? I am a real fan of the feel and sound of clay chips aka paulsons, ASM's etc...

Now you can get custom Chipcos at thechiplab.com too. 500 chips for under $500 dollars.

Chipcos are currently used in many casinos.
