I'm new here... NL rule question

Hi everyone... nice forum you have here.
I've been playing poker for a few years and have hosted a few games and been to handful. Mostly NL tournys. I've played in a casino only a few times. One NL tourny and another TH 2/4 cash game. I like playing NL tourny the most.

I have some questions about rules... please don't flame for these.

I've played NL where the minimum bet for preflop/flop is the small blind and turn/river is the large. I've also seen it written on line that for NL the minimum is the small for all 5 rounds of betting.

The other question is about raising. In NL is there a minimum raise. I was told that if someone bets (say $500 and the blinds are 100/200) your minimum raise has to be at least $500. I can see saying the minimum raise should be $200 since that is the LB.

Thanks.

-Jeff

1) the minimum bet in all betting rounds is equal to the large blind

2) the minimum raise in any poker game is always at least as much as the previous bet/raise.

hey tom; if the blinds are 100/200, can i bet 5? wait, it's no limit, though, right?

cool... thanks that is what I told this person. I could call your $500 and raise you $5, but nobody is going to respect my raise if I do that. He said I was wrong....

he said you're wrong b/c in fact you're wrong. if he bets 500, your raise must be equal to his bet, as i posted above.

situation:
he bets 500

if you choose to raise, it must be to 1000 total.

of course if you raised to 505, it wouldn't be respected. in fact, it would be a complete waste of time. that's partially the reason for that rule.
