Betting Rules

Ok, not sure where to put this so sorry if wrong forum.
A situation came up tonight that none of us were sure what the correct ruling should be.
Here's the situation $1/2 NLTH on the turn:
Down to 3 players; SB, BB (me) and button
SB bets $25, BB calls, Button re-raises all-in for another $7. SB obviously calls the $7. BB (me) would like to re-raise the SB. Can I?

We usually would allow this as it's never been pointed out otherwise. The button player plays in lots of casinos and says I wouldn't be able to re-raise in that spot as he was all-in and made less than the minimum bet...orignal bet was $25.

Anyways, the house did allow me to re-raise. SB calls. Rainbow in the river. SB checks, BB bets $25 and SB calls. Both the button and SB had a little boat. BB had the nut boat.

Re: Betting Rules

So, your all in is $33. Two other player can only match $33 and can't be re-raise. It is cap.

No, the Button is all in. The SB and BB have plenty of chips behind the $33.

The button is correct. Since the all-in bet was not enough to be considered a raise, the action is said to be capped and you can only call or fold.

BUT, if you had not taken action before the all-in, then you can re-raise. For example, if the first player bets $25 and the next player goes all-in for $33, if you're next to act, you can re-raise even though the all-in "raise" was less than the original bet.

PS: This thread should be in the Home Poker Rules subforum.

Re: Betting Rules

Yeh a lapse of conc. on your part. Why did you smooth call? were you expecting the BTN to shove it in?

I'm confused shouldn't the BTN have acted first?

The whole hand seems very strange.

Either way i think the rule is that if the raise is less than Half the original raise.

i.e here the raise was $23, so if the BTN had raised to $35 ($23+12) you could have re-raised, whereas anything $34 or less you cannot.

Re: Betting Rules

An incomplete raise doesn't re-open the betting. You can only call or fold.

For future, you should always have a printed copy of Robert's Rules of Poker on-hand (and read it in advance). That way, you can resolve these disputes without any remaining doubt.

Re: Betting Rules

Can we clear one thing up. Had you already called the $25?

If not, you are free to raise because you have not had action yet. If so, then you can only call the extra 7.

The Half-bet rule is for limit.

Yes, I called the $25 bet by SB. Button raises $7 (total bet is now $32) and is all-in.
Action back to SB and he calls the $7. I want to re-raise.
Button is all-in. Both SB and BB (me) are deep stacked.
