Moving Players in MTT Home Games

I've looked around a little and can't find a definitive answer. Normally we just let Tournament Director tell us where to sit players when tables become unbalanced, however I wanted to know what the actual rule is, if any. We have a few who say the next BB from the heavy table should move to the BB at the light table. Another says the next BB at the heavy table moves to 1 seat behind the dealer, because that player is at a disadvantage coming to a new table. Another says the next BB at the heavy table just fills the seat of the previously busted player. Any advice?

I go with moving the player in the same seat method.

I don't believe there is a definitive answer, but as long as it is clearly stated before the tourney begins, and it doesn't cause a player to be blinded twice in a row (two BB in a row for instance), I think it's a fair move.

We move the BB or the dealer, depending on where we are playing and who is hosting.

I usually move the player behind the dealer to a seat behind the dealer on the new table (or as close as possible). Just to give them a few hands to "settle" in.

Re: Moving Players in MTT Home Games

I've had good luck following this suggestion/procedure from the author of Tournament Director:

If you had the dealer button designated on your tables, then the TD will attempt to move players in a dealer-relative way. In other words, if a player needs to be moved to table 1, seat 5, and the dealer button is at seat 1, then seat 5 is 4 seats away from the button. The TD will attempt to find a player at another table that can be moved that is sitting 4 seats away from the dealer at that table. That way, the moved player is no better or worse off with respect to paying blinds.

If you have the dealer buttons set on each of your tables, you need to make sure to set to their current locations before moving players. This would be a pain to do real-time, so the easiest way to do this is to wait until the TD suggest movement, disregard the movement and set your dealer buttons to their proper locations, then press the Suggest Movement button.

2009 Tournament Directors Association

6. Balancing TablesIn flop and mixed games when balancing tables, players will be moved from the next big blind to the worst position
available at the table being moved to. Worst position is never the small blind. The table from which a player is moved
will be as specified by a predetermined procedure. In stud-only games, players will be moved by position (the last
seat to open up at the short table is the seat to be filled). Play will halt on any table that is three or more players short.

Re: Moving Players in MTT Home Games

search for CT member mrticsay's explanation of moving players. I play in his monthly league and have seen is used for nearly 3 years now. It works great and doesn't stick any player with paying additional blinds.
