home game, pass the deal and making change

In your home games with out a dedicated dealer do you allow all players
to make their own change from the pot
--- or ---
require that the 'dealer' for that round make change for all players?

A friendly game with knowledgeable players is one thing but I feel the 'dealer'
is responsible for the pot in that round. In a game with players unknown to me
I was made to feel like a jerk for bringing this up.
Was I out of line or is/should this be standard poker ediquite?

I can't even spell "ediquite" but it is important to me, maybe chiptalk could use
a forum topic on poker ediquite (or however you spell it).

Re: home game, pass the deal and making change

We're somewhat informal about this. If somebody puts out a chip that's too large, somebody else at the table offers to change the chip from his own stack. Example: Player A wishes to call T150 and puts out two T100 chips. Another player will give the Player A four T25's in exchange for one of the T100's. The caller adjusts his bet and pulls the extra two T25's back into his/her stack. Alternatively, Player A asks somebody else to break a T100 before calling.

We discourage (make that really, really discourage) players from making change from the pot. We do not allow players to make change from other players' bets or blinds (e.g., by putting out two $100's and taking two T25's from the BB's blind, although every so often this is attempted). Our players understand the reason behind this: Less confusion over who has bet what.

No splashing the pot. Bets remain in front of the player until the betting round is over.

The dealer is responsible for making sure that the pot is right.

Disclaimer: These comments don't address all possible situations for betting and making change.

Praise: Our players are quite conscientious, and they are aware that observing good poker etiquette results in a better and fair game for everybody.

Observation: We play with lots of chips, which significantly reduces the need to make change.

Re: home game, pass the deal and making change

We allow players to make change from the pot or another player. At any given time, there are only about 2 people actually paying attention to what is going on and usually only 1 of them has any kind of clue. If we relied upon the dealer, then there is a 4 in 5 chance he is one of the clueless people...

Re: home game, pass the deal and making change

I personally think the dealer is responsible. To many hands in the pot makes for bad mojo. Sooner or later your pots will be missing money and its not worth the headache of having to call a buddy out in front of his friends for cheating the pot. With only one person dealing with the money it keeps everything on the up and up. Good luck
